CHILDREN AND NATURE

BLUE MT. LAKE—Join the Adirondack Museum at Crandall Public Library in Glens Falls for “Children and Nature: The ABCs of Observation” with educator Paul Hai Sunday, April 22.

Part of the museum’s 2012 Cabin Fever Sunday series, this special program for families celebrates Earth Day 2012. The fully interactive presentation engages all ages in rediscovering skills as keen observers of the natural world. The program will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. Crandall Public Library is at 251 Glen Street. The program will be followed by outdoor activities in Crandall Park.

CLASSES

DEFENSIVE DRIVING CLASS

LONG LAKE—A Defensive Driving Class will be held Thursday, April 19, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Long Lake Town Hall. The discounted cost for the class is $30 per student.

By completing the course the student will receive a 10 percent discount on auto insurance and a four-point reduction from his or her driving record.

SMALL BUSINESS BASICS

INDIAN LAKE—”Small Business Basics” or what to do before putting up an ‘Open for Business’ sign will be held Tuesday, April 24, from 6-8 p.m. at Indian Lake Central School. Participants will learn how to determine if a business idea is feasible and if it would be profitable.

Karen Stehlin, regional director at North Country Small Business Development Center, SUNY Plattsburgh, will lead attendees in an understanding of the rewards, opportunities and challenges of being a business owner.

ADK. ADVENTURE FESTIVAL

NORTH CREEK—The Third Annual Adirondack Adventure Festival here, sponsored by Gore Mountain Regional Chamber of Commerce, will be May 4-6, at the same time and in cooperation with the 55th Annual White Water Derby.

There will be 50- and 20-mile road bike tours, a 10-mile mountain bike ride, free river raft rides, a guided hike, fly-fishing demonstrations, a craft fair, pony rides, kids games, live music, food and exhibits.

Exhibitors include North Country Wild Care with Birds of Prey, Warren County Fish Hatchery Trout Release, North Creek Depot Museum, Saratoga North Creek Railway and more.

SEEING SOAP

BLUE MT. LAKE—Soap Installation: Soap Formation Series by Russell Prigodich is being exhibited through May 5 at The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts on Rt. 28 here.

This installation alters one’s perception of a common item (soap) and displays its qualities in a new way. Pieces will be hung, draped and suspended from ceiling to wall. However, despite the way in which they are altered the pieces will not lose their identity as soap.

ART GALLERY SHOW

BLUE MT. LAKE—Inside China: Oil Paintings by Theresa De Salvio is be on display at The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts on Rt. 28 here through May 5.

This large-scale series was created after visiting Beijing, China in November 2009. The work attempts to capture the spirit of the people as China transforms. These paintings are based on observation, photographs and imagination.

SIGN OF THE TIMES

BLUE MT. LAKE—Sign of the Times: Neon Photos by Penny Perkins is be on display at The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts on Rt. 28 here through May 5.

By forcing viewers to look at signs from new perspectives Perkins’s work transforms these giant 3D sculptures from mundane relics of consumerism into intimate, two-dimensional artistic homages.

LEARN TO TIE FLIES

NEWCOMB—Get ready for the season at The Nature of Fly Fishing - Fly Tying Workshop Saturday, April 28, starting at 9 a.m. at the Adirondack Interpretive Center here.

Adirondack Fly Fishing Guide Rick Kovacs will lead participants through an introduction to fly tying and basic techniques. The registration fee is $25 each, $15 for members plus $45 for a fly tying tool kit to take home.

ON EARLY SETTLERS

SPECULATOR—The Lake Pleasant / Speculator Historical Society is sponsoring a bicentennial event, “Our Early Settlers,” Friday, April 27, at 7 p.m. at Lake Pleasant Central School.

Learn about the early settlers of Lake Pleasant: who they were, where they came from and why they came, including such families as Courtney, Dennie, Dunham, Dunning, Page, Peck, Nichols and several more.

Other upcoming bicentennial events include a tour of the Lake Pleasant county buildings with Hamilton County Historian Bill Zullo Saturday, May 19, at 10 a.m.; Tours of Camp-of-the-Woods Saturday, June 2, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; and a showing of “War of 1812” Friday, June 8, at 7 p.m. at the school.

MUSIC

SUN MOUNTAIN FIDDLER

WELLS—Renowned throughout the region as a “wild and crazy” performer, the Sun Mountain Fiddler, Dick Solberg, comes to Wells Community Hall to perform Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m.

Virginia Hosley Free Library (Wells Library) is sponsoring the free, family-oriented program.

Solberg fell in love with country fiddling as a young man while training in classical piano and violin. During a long and colorful career he has regaled audiences around the globe with energized renditions of Celtic, bluegrass, Cajun and old-time American music.

The concert is the library’s fourth event in its winter 2012 series. Refreshments will follow the performance.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS IV

INDIAN LAKE—Get ready to rock. Battle of the Bands returns to Indian Lake Theater Friday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m.

Got a band? Think it has what it takes to be the best? Enter a band for a chance at fame, bragging rights and a Grand Prize. Each band pays a $20 dollar fee for a chance to take the title and the money and win a paid gig at the Arts Center in Blue Mountain Lake.

The winner is decided by the audience, so gather groupies, friends, parents and everyone else for this awesome night of rock in the Adirondacks. General admission is $5.

LIVING ABLE RETURNS

LONG LAKE—The Arts Center’s Living Able program returns April 27 and 28 with “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” at Long Lake Town Hall. Shows are Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. General admission is $10.

The musical features performers partnered with adults with disabilities to portray an average day in the life of Charlie Brown, made up of moments picked from the classic cartoon strip, from Valentine’s Day to the baseball season, from wild optimism to utter despair, all mixed in with the lives of his friends.

A free set painting workshop will be held at the Arts Center in Blue Mountain Lake April 13-15: Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m.

WORKSHOPS

GOURD SCULPTING II

NORTHVILLE—Michelle Heavner will teach Gourd Sculpting II Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at BCON Corner, 99 N. Main Street here.

In this second of two gourd workshops, students deepen their knowledge of design, tool use and safety. Participants will produce a hand-crafted gourd with either a traditional Native American design or a design of their own choosing.

SKIT WRITING WORKSHOP

BLUE MT. LAKE—The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts here will hold a “Forever Wild” Skit Writing Workshop three Mondays: April 30, May 7 and May 14, from 6-8 p.m.

Write and develop hilarious and satirical skits about life in the Adirondacks. All the skits developed in the workshop will be featured in this year’s “Forever Wild” production at the AC in June. Alex Roalsvig and Stephen Svoboda will teach the free course.
