CHILDREN/TEENS

WILDLIFE ART CLASS

LONG LAKE—Children ages 7-12 can create, paint and express themselves in a summer art class custom-designed to each child’s ability. Paint and draw in nature Wednesdays through August from 1-3 p.m. at the Geiger Arena here. Call (518) 624-3077 to sign up. The fee is $3 per class.

YOGA IS BACK

INDIAN LAKE—Karin and Garet Church are again teaching yoga classes at Indian Lake Theater. Two classes / two levels are held each week through Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Bring yoga mats and two bath towels or a small blanket. Each class costs $10. Thursdays is the Intermediate class at Indian Lake Theater and Saturdays is the Basics class at Indian Lake Ski Hut.

The Churches donate their time to teach these classes; the fees are donated to the theater. Call (518) 648-5950 to reserve a class or classes

HUNTER SAFETY COURSE

WELLS-A 10-hour Hunter Safety Education Course will be held Friday, Sept. 9, from 6-9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wells Community Hall on State Route 30 here.

Completion of the 10-hour Hunter Safety Course is required before a hunting license can be issued in New York state. Students must be at least age 11. Bring a pen. Call 924-4115 to register.

TWIGS TREASURES

LAKE PLEASANT—TWIGS Treasures House is open for business Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is on Page Street near the intersection with State Route 8.

Browse two floors of constantly changing arrays of antiques and slightly used furniture, household goods, toys and linens. To donate items call Letty Rudes (548-7077), Lore Frisk (548-4668) or Susan Thielking (548-6318).

EVENTS

CRUISE INTO N. CREEK

NORTH CREEK—Main Street here is hosting Cruise Nights from 5-8 p.m. every Thursday through Sept. 9. Classic car, sports car and hot rod owners are invited to display their cars.

The event includes trophies in a variety of categories, door prizes, live music and 50/50 raffles. There will be a “final” Cruise and Car Show Saturday, Sept. 17. For more go to www.visitnorthcreek.com.

NIGHT OF GOOD HARMONY

INDIAN LAKE—Indian Lake Volunteer Ambulance Corps will host The New Night of Good Harmony Sunday, Sept. 4, from 4-10 p.m. in Byron Park here as a fund-raiser. Admission is $5 each.

The event will feature the Jay Walken Band from Perth, Adirondack Acoustics, Ed Sokol, Patty Yates and Jim Dunn. Hamburgers, hot dogs and draft beer will be sold. An adult must accompany children under age 16.

There will also be a 50-50 raffle and a raffle for either a barbecue grill or a kayak (not yet decided). There will be a shuttle bus from the park to homes in Indian Lake.

MOOSE FESTIVAL RETURNS

INDIAN LAKE—Moose will be everywhere during the 2nd Annual “Great Adirondack Moose Festival” here Sept. 24-25. Visitors may even see a real moose.

Events include a guided hike; a self-guided scenic driving tour; fly-fishing and fly-tying demonstrations and exhibits; Adirondack Quilt Show and Sale; Backcountry Safety Program; Big Moose Tent Craft and Vendor Show; Old Fashioned Turkey Shoot; Moose Scavenger Hunt; sidewalk sales; logging activities (throw an ax and roll a log); a Moose Calling Contest; souvenir photos with festival mascots Bruce the Moose and Smokey Bear; an Open House at Indian Lake Museum and a Main Street Walking Tour; and a national juried photography show at the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts.

FALL FESTIVAL FUN

SPECULATOR—The Friends of Oak Mountain are planning a Fall Festival at Oak Mountain Ski Center for Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A variety of activities will entertain all ages. Take a chairlift ride to the top of the mountain to enjoy the fabulous views and a picnic. Visit craft exhibits and booths presented by local businesses.

Children can become involved with a variety of fun-filled activities and adults may wish to participate in a new event called “The Cake Walk.” Music will be provided from 12-3 p.m. Relax and enjoy some favorite foods prepared by area chefs.

There is no admission fee; however, there will be a $5 fee for the chairlift rides and food and crafts may be purchased.

HELP THE HOTEL

LONG LAKE - Friends of the Adirondack Hotel will hold a fund-raiser Saturday, Sept. 24, from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. to help pay for fixing flood damage at the historic structure.

The hotel was inundated during spring flooding, when the waters of Long Lake rose to the third step of the front porch. Its boilers, front porch, parking lot and more were extensively damaged.

Adirondack Hotel Flood Relief will feature live music, a silent auction, food and t-shirts. T-shirts are available now at the hotel’s gift shop and tap room.

Tickets at $30 each / $50 per couple may be bought beforehand at Helms Village Store, Natural Beauty, Shear Images and the Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake; The Bear Trap in Indian Lake; or at the door.

NRA BANQUET & AUCTION

HOFFMEISTER—Opportunities to win three outstanding firearms will be available at the Seventh Annual Friends of NRA Banquet and Auction at Morehouse Recreation Center in Hoffmeister Saturday, Sept. 24.

The dinner, catered by Union Hall Inn of Johnstown, begins at 5:30 p.m. It will be followed by an auction and raffle drawings.

The Friends of NRA Gun of the Year is the Centennial Edition of the Colt Model 1911 Pistol. The distinctive .45ACP is truly a collector’s item, limited to 1,150, it features engravings of every major war in which it prevailed. Drawing tickets are $10 each or three for $20.

The event’s host, Central Adirondack Committee, will also offer a custom-built .30-06 Remington Model 700. The rifle has a walnut stock and bolt action with both soft and hard cases. Tickets are $10 or three for $20. One need not be present to win.

The third major firearm to be auctioned is truly unique and could be a dream come true for someone. Shaw Precision Guns will build a Mark VII Custom Rifle for the highest bidder. The winner will select the specifications from a long list of choices (see www.ershawbarrels.com). This offer has a $900 reserve.

EXHIBITS

ON THE CIVIL WAR

NORTH CREEK—The Widlund Gallery at Tannery Pond Community Center here is featuring pictures of men from Johnsburg who fought in the Civil War, along with other historical photographs, period flags and a display on Mathew Brady, noted Civil War photographer born in Johnsburg, through Sept. 21.

The presentation has been put together by author Glenn L. Pearsall. He will give a two-hour talk at TPCC starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, featuring Civil War re-enactors in uniform reading letters and diaries.

STOCK THE PANTRIES

SPECULATOR—Adirondacks Speculator Region Chamber of Commerce Office is holding a food drive until Sept. 10. Food pantry items may be dropped off at the chamber’s office in The Lane Emporium here.

The food will be distributed to needy Hamilton County residents through food pantries. Drop off non-perishable foods through Sept. 10 and at the Town Wide September 11 Remembrance Day Sunday, Sept 11.

CHICKEN BARBECUE

LONG LAKE—Celebrate Labor Day Weekend with Long Lake Fire Department’s famous chicken barbeque and live entertainment by the Fulton Chain Gang Saturday, Sept. 3.

Festivities kick off at 4 p.m. at the Mt. Sabattis Pavilion. Fulton Chain Gang performs from 5-8 p.m. Admission is $10 each / $5 ages 12 and under.

The Town of Long Lake and Long Lake Fire Department are sponsoring this event.

SENIORS WILL PICNIC

QUEENSBURY—The Warren County Council of Seniors & Warren / Hamilton Counties Office for the Aging will hold the annual Senior Picnic Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Elks Lodge, 32 Cronin Road, Queensbury.

Coffee and doughnuts will be available at 10 a.m. The picnic starts at noon. There will also be blood pressure screenings.

Tickets are $3 each and must be purchased through local senior clubs or meal sites before Aug. 26. The menu is chicken, corn on the cob, baked potato, rolls, watermelon and juice.

COME FOR THE CLAMS

INLET—The Third Annual IVES Clam Bake will be Saturday, Sept. 10, from 3-10 p.m. at the IVES Building at 1 Limekiln Road here to benefit Inlet Volunteer Emergency Services.

SMORGASBORD DINNER

WELLS—Wells United Methodist Church will hold a Smorgasbord Dinner Saturday, Sept. 10, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the church.

Make a donation and enjoy many delicious dishes; pick favorites and how much you want. There will also be beverages and make-your-own ice cream sundaes, compliments of Stewart’s Shops.

Have dinner out and leave the fixing, serving and clean-up to someone else. A portion of the proceeds will go to mission projects.

GARDENING

PLANT EXCHANGE AND SALE

INDIAN LAKE—The Indian Lake Garden Club will host its annual Plant Exchange and Sale Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon at Pete Hutchins Floor Covering parking lot at the intersection of state routes 30 and 28 here.

Gardeners looking for quality plants to launch a new garden or searching for the right plant to fit into their garden are invited to attend this annual horticultural event.

The event also provides opportunities for gardeners to meet other area gardeners and stock up on some of their favorite perennials.

All plants are donated by club members, who encourage visitors to come early for the best selections. Club members will be available to chat with shoppers about their selections, garden and plant topics and the care of their favorite perennial treasures.

GOLF FOR HEAT

INDIAN LAKE—The Knights of Columbus will hold the George “Coach” Burgess Golf Tournament Saturday, Sept. 17, starting at 9 a.m. at Cedar River Golf Course. Registration is $65 per player and includes a hot dog lunch and chicken barbecue.

HISTORY

MUSEUM IS OPEN

WELLS—Wells Museum on Main Street here is open for the summer. This year’s exhibit honors veterans both past and present.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays during June and September and Fridays and Saturdays during July and August, or any time by calling Kathy Olsen at 924-7922.

HISTORY RE-ENACTMENT

NORTH CREEK—There will be a dramatic living history re-enactment at Ski Bowl Park on Route 28 here the weekend of Sept. 9-11.

Re-enactment groups will represent the lives of men in the 118th NY, the 123rd NY, 95th NY and 76th NY during the Civil War. The park has spacious grounds, fresh water, restrooms and ample parking. The public is welcome.

The encampment and a Civil War exhibit at Tannery Pond Community Center, 228 Main Street, are part of a national effort to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War of 1861-1865.

VISUAL ARTS

RUBENS AT THE HYDE

GLENS FALLS—A painting by the Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is being exhibited at The Hyde Collection here while its prized “Christ with Folded Arms” by Rembrandt van Rijn is on loan.

The work, lent by the Detroit Institute of Arts, is “Hygeia, Goddess of Health” (1615).

The voluptuous, baroque figure of a semi-nude female is shown in the glowing, healthy flesh tones synonymous with Rubens and the subject.

“Christ with Folded Arms” is on loan to the Louvre in Paris. When that exhibition closes it travels to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and then to the Detroit Institute of Arts for exhibition beginning in February 2012.

WORKSHOPS

BEGINNER CERAMICS

NORTHVILLE-Sacandaga Valley Arts Network is sponsoring a Beginner Ceramics: Handbuilding workshop Sept. 6, 8, 13, 15 and 20 with potter Michele Drozd.

Students will learn how to work with clay, roll slabs, create and use drape molds and form the slabs to create plates and platters of varying sizes. The class will cover stamping, decoration, slip trailing, etc. as well as historic and contemporary pottery, sketch ideas and the bisque and glaze firing processes.

Each of the five sessions will run from 6-8:30 p.m. at Bellwether Studio @ The Orendaga, 732 South Main Street, Northville. The cost is $100 SVAN members / $105 others. Supplies are $50. Contact Michele Drozd at 863-8013 or www.orendaga.com.

BEGINNING HANDWEAVING

BENSON—Sacandaga Valley Arts Network is sponsoring a Beginning Handweaving - Part I workshop with fiber artist Arlene Rambush Sept. 13, 20 and 27 and Oct. 4 and 11 from 1-4 p.m. at Deerhaven Studio,130 North Road, Benson.

Students will learn how to wind the warp and dress the loom, and will plan and complete at least two woven items each.

WORKSHOP & OPEN MIC

INDIAN LAKE-Members of the Indian Lake Library Writers Group invite everyone to join them for a writing workshop Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 1-4 p.m., led by Steve Coffman and Michael Czarnecki.

Bring work to share for ideas and suggestions or just for an audience. Return for an “open mic” from 7-9 p.m. at the library. All are welcome.

LEARN TO DRAW

NORTHVILLE-Sacandaga Valley Arts Network is sponsoring a Drawing Workshop with Constance Dodge of Dodge House Lakeside Gallery Sept. 22 and 29 and Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27.

The focus will be on drawing from life observations, experiences and imagination. Participants will be introduced to line, shade/value, textural mark making and spatial relationships including perspective. Traditional materials will be used along with experimental media. Color will be introduced toward the end of the six-week class. The goal throughout will be to develop dramatic contrast in drawing.

Each session runs from 6-9 p.m. at Edinburg Community Center, 45 Military Road, Edinburg.
