ADK. CANOE CLASSIC

KIDS GET IN FREE

BLUE MT. LAKE—The Adirondack Museum here is offering a special end-of-summer gift to families. Children ages 6-12 are admitted free through Sept. 7. Ages 5 and younger always enter free.

Whether it is feeding trout in the pond, exploring the little log cabin, creating paper crafts at the Reising Schoolhouse or enjoying a game of kid-sized horseshoes there is always something fun and imaginative at the Adirondack Museum.

Explore “The Great Outdoors,” an exhibition just for children featuring hands-on discovery stations all about outdoor sports. Young explorers can “cook” a meal over the campfire, “sleep out” in the tent, use snowshoes in the summer or try rock climbing.

PUT ON A SMILE

INDIAN LAKE—St. Mary’s Catholic Church on W. Main Street here will hold its annual SMILE Craft Fair and Flea Market Saturday, Sept. 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be crafts, a raffle, a bake sale, a flea market, a plant sale and refreshments to benefit outreach programs in the community.

PRIVATE LESSONS

BLUE MT. LAKE-The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts here is offering private dance lessons with Caitlin Geier, a dancer, choreographer and actor visiting from Los Angeles. Geier is offering private lessons in jazz, ballet and contemporary dance for anyone interested in taking their skills to the next level.

Whether you have been dancing for years or are just starting out, Geier’s attention to detail and passion for teaching the art of dance will get you on your way to becoming the dancer you want to be.

She is also offering ballroom dancing lessons for couples and singles of all ages. Choose from salsa, cha-cha, waltz and jive.

ADIRONDACK ECOFEST

INDIAN LAKE—Take green action in Hamilton County! Adirondack Ecofest will enlighten residents and visitors about environmental sustainability and stewardship Friday, Sept. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Byron Park here.

Participate in a forum and panel discussion from 12-4 p.m. and have questions answered by invasive species, water quality, recycling and energy conservation experts. Browse through a variety of exhibits.

FALL FUN DAY

SPECULATOR-Fall Fun Day Saturday, Sept. 4, is an afternoon of fun and games for all ages from 1-6 p.m. at the Speculator Pavilion off Rt. 30 here. There will be a DJ and karaoke, a water slide and bounce house, food and beverages, a 50-50 raffle and door prizes every hour.

The event is being organized by Friends of Oak Mountain to benefit the ski center here.

ADK FALL OUTING

LAKE PLEASANT—ADK Fall Outing 2010 will be held at Camp Fowler on Rt. 8 here Sept. 10-12.

INLET FALL FESTIVAL

INLET—Inlet Fall Festival will be Saturday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fern Park on Loomis Road here.

PIG OUT AT PIG ROAST

INDIAN LAKE—Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual fall Pig Roast at the fire hall on Rt. 30/28 Saturday, Sept. 4, from 4 p.m. to sold out.

The pig is spit-roasted and comes with all the fixings. Show up early, as this usually sells out early.

FOOD AND MUSIC

LONG LAKE—Long Lake Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Chicken Barbecue and Concert Saturday, Sept. 4, starting at 4 p.m. at Mt. Sabattis Pavilion here.

It will cost $8 for half a chicken with beans and potato; $1 for corn; $1 for soda / water; and $4 for a Hot Dog Kids Meal.

Fulton Chain Gang will perform. Fireworks begin at dusk. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, family and friends for an evening of music, dancing and eats.

CHICKEN BARBECUE

BLUE MT. LAKE—Blue Mountain Lake Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual fall Chicken Barbecue at the fire hall here Sunday, Sept. 5, from noon until sold out.

Enjoy lunch served by local firemen and helpers. The barbecued chicken will be accompanied by salads, fresh vegetables, deserts and more. Come early as this meal sells out quickly.

CLAM BAKE COMING

INLET—The Second Annual Clam Bake here will be Saturday, Sept. 11, from 3-10 p.m. at Inlet Volunteer Emergency Services Building on the corner of Limekiln Road and Route 28.

Enjoy clams, burgers, hot dogs, barbecued dhicken, dorn on the cob, salads and much more! Entertainment is by Mark Christensen Joe Bolton Band.

CHICKEN & BISCUITS

WELLS—Wells United Methodist Church will hold a Chicken and Biscuits Early Fall Celebration Saturday, Sept. 11, from 4-6:30 p.m. (or until the food runs out).

The menu is chicken in gravy, George Chamberlain’s “famous” biscuits, mashed potatoes, green beans and carrots, homemade desserts and beverages.

The charge is $8.50 per adult and $4.50 per child age 6-12. Children under age 6 eat free. Take-outs are available.

TOUR TO GIFFIN

WELLS—Wells Historical Society will sponsor a tour to the ghost town of Griffin Thursday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m.

Don Williams will talk about the ghost town of Griffin at Wells Museum on Main Street here. After the talk car pool to Griffin to look at what is left of the town. Cookies and coffee will be served before leaving the museum.

LABOR DAY

LONG LAKE—The Fulton Chain Gang is slated to return to Long Lake for its Second Annual Labor Day Chicken BBQ Saturday, Sept. 4, performing from 5-8 p.m. at the Mt. Sabattis Pavilion.

With high-energy stage presence and hard-driving country-rock style the Fulton Chain Gang always pleases.

Long Lake Fire Department broke records with last year’s bountiful chicken barbecue and plans to do so again. Get half a barbecued chicken, coleslaw, beans, potatoes and a roll for $8; an ear of corn for an additional $1; and water or soda for $1 for a total cost of $10. Kids’ plates with hot dog, coleslaw, beans and potatoes are $4. To-goes will be available.

There will be a drawing for a 2010 Polaris Ranger 400 provided by Progressive Motorsports, Hudson Falls. Tickets at $10 each are available at area businesses.

ON INVASIVE SPECIES

PISECO—Piseco Women’s Club will present Caitlin Stewart with a talk on Invasive Species Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Piseco Community Hall starting at 7 p.m.

This meeting is of general interest, and everyone is invited to come listen and learn more about this topic of importance to the Adirondacks and everyone living here. Refreshments will be offered.

ANYONE CAN DO IT

INLET-Come to Arrowhead Park here for Family Karaoke with Mike Notley Saturday, Sept. 4, from 6-8 p.m.

The lakefront event is part of Inlet’s “Sunsets by the Lake” Summer Concert Series. The rain location is the Fern Park Pavilion. The Town of Inlet, Central Adirondack Association, ADKPictures.com and Nelson’s Cottages are sponsoring the series.

Karaoke is fun musical entertainment for the whole family. Everyone wants to be a star. Karaoke lets you get up on stage and live out your dream of being a singer.

RODNEY PELON BENEFIT

INDIAN LAKE—The annual Rodney Pelon Benefit at Byron Park Pavilion here will be Sunday, Sept. 5, from 12-5 p.m. with entertainment by various musical artists.

Proceeds go to the Rodney Pelon Scholarship Fund sponsored by Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Auxiliary.

GUY MENDILOW BAND

RAQUETTE LAKE—The Guy Mendilow Band delivers its dynamic blend of Israeli and Sephardi tempered with Brazilian street beats and blues at Great Camp Sagamore here Saturday, Sept. 11. The concert kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and is a joint fund-raiser for Great Camp Sagamore and the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts.

Tickets are $20 or $40 (includes dinner) and can be purchased online at www.adirondackarts.org.

Blurring boundaries and connecting sounds, stories, rhythms and roots are central to the mission inspiring the Guy Mendilow Band. Israeli peace songs and ancient Sephardi canticas meet Bahian street beats and blues.

The Guy Mendilow Band includes world-class musicians from Israel, Argentina, Japan and the United States.

FABRIC AND FIBER ARTS

BLUE MT. LAKE-The Adirondack Museum on Rt. 30 here will present an Adirondack Fabric and Fiber Arts Festival Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

‘KIMBERLY AKIMBO’

BLUE MT. LAKE—The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts here will present “Kimberly Akimbo” Saturday, Sept. 18, starting at 7 p.m.

Played by an actress in her 60’s, Kimberly is an ordinary 16-year-old with an extraordinary disease that caused her body to age four times faster than normal.

JURIED EXHIBIT IS ON

BLUE MT. LAKE—The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts is presenting its first juried photography exhibit, Diversity Through Many Lenses!, to Oct. 10. A Gallery Reception will be held Sept. 18 from 6-7 p.m.

Photos were chosen based on composition, process and diversity. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Judge’s Choice, Nature, Animal, Black & White, Portrait, Alternate Process and Viewer’s Choice.

By purchasing a raffle ticket, gallery viewers can select their favorite exhibit photo and enter to a photography-themed prize. Tickets are one for $5 or three for $10. Prizes include: a brand new Canon PowerShot A490, three one-year subscriptions to Adirondack Life magazine, a framed photo print by Richard Walker and a one-hour photo shoot with Marketing Director Anton Briones.

Hemlock Hall, Marty’s Chili Nights and Timberlock Camp Inc. are sponsoring this national juried photography exhibition.

FOOD AS MEDICINE

LONG LAKE—Join Susanne Murtha Saturday, Sept. 11, as she teaches a workshop on Food As Medicine at the Long Lake Town Hall Nutrition Site starting at 10 a.m.

For centuries food was used to create life balance. It was medicine for maintaining wellness and getting through illness. A seasonally balanced lunch is included.
