BOATING

LONG BOAT REGATTA

LONG LAKE-The Long Boat Regatta will be Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Town Beach here, a day full of competitions and demonstrations for all ages. The first race begins at 10 a.m.

Races include the North American War Canoe Championships, a 22-mile Flatwater Race on Long Lake; a 22-mile C-4 Marathon, unlimited kayak competition, guideboat outrigger; and dragon boat races for youth and adults.

ARTS FROM THE START

BLUE MT. LAKE--The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts' preschool program, Arts from the Start, is accepting submissions for its Fall Session. The program starts Sept. 27 and runs through Dec. 8.

Arts from the Start is an art-based preschool program for children age 2-1/2 to 5 years. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Come to Open House Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 12-2 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 22, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Fees are_$300 / $250 members and_$475 / $400 members (sibling rate). Students must be potty trained and have current immunizations. For more information call (518) 352-7715.

CLASSES

HUNTER SAFETY COURSE

LONG LAKE--The New York State Hunter Safety Course will be offered Friday, Sept. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 1, at Long Lake Central School. Participants must attend both sessions to earn a certificate.

Friday's class runs from 6-9 p.m. and Saturday's from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. One must be age 11 or older to take the free course. Call (518) 624-3077 to sign up.

MOOSE FESTIVAL RETURNS

INDIAN LAKE--Moose will be everywhere during the 2nd Annual "Great Adirondack Moose Festival" here Sept. 24-25. Visitors may even see a real moose.

Events include a guided hike; a self-guided scenic driving tour; fly-fishing and fly-tying demonstrations and exhibits; Adirondack Quilt Show and Sale; Backcountry Safety Program; Big Moose Tent Craft and Vendor Show; Old Fashioned Turkey Shoot; Moose Scavenger Hunt; sidewalk sales; logging activities; a Moose Calling Contest; souvenir photos with festival mascots Bruce the Moose and Smokey Bear; an Open House at Indian Lake Museum and a Main Street Walking Tour; and a national juried photography show at the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts.

FALL FESTIVAL FUN

SPECULATOR--The Friends of Oak Mountain are planning a Fall Festival at Oak Mountain Ski Center for Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A variety of activities will entertain all ages. Take a chairlift ride to the top of the mountain to enjoy the fabulous views and a picnic. Visit craft exhibits and booths presented by local businesses.

Children can become involved with a variety of fun-filled activities and adults may wish to participate in a new event called "The Cake Walk." Music will be provided from 12-3 p.m. Relax and enjoy some favorite foods prepared by area chefs.

There is no admission fee; however, there will be a $5 fee for the chairlift rides and food and crafts may be purchased.

HELP THE HOTEL

LONG LAKE--Friends of the Adirondack Hotel will hold a fund-raiser Saturday, Sept. 24, from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. to help pay for fixing flood damage at the historic structure.

The hotel was inundated during spring flooding, when the waters of Long Lake rose to the third step of the front porch. Its boilers, front porch, parking lot and more were extensively damaged.

Adirondack Hotel Flood Relief will feature live music, a silent auction, food and more.

T-shirts are available now at the hotel's gift shop and tap room.

Tickets at $30 each / $50 per couple may be bought beforehand at Helms Village Store, Natural Beauty, Shear Images and the Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake; The Bear Trap in Indian Lake; or at the door.

NRA BANQUET & AUCTION

HOFFMEISTER--Outstanding firearms will be won at the Seventh Annual Friends of NRA Banquet and Auction at Morehouse Recreation Center on Rt. 8 here Saturday. The dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. It will be followed by an auction and raffle drawings.

Someone will win the centennial edition of the Colt Model 1911 .45ACP pistol. A custom-built .30-06 Remington Model 700 with walnut stock, bolt action and soft and hard cases will also be raffled. Tickets for both are $10 or three for $20. One need not be present to win.

The third major firearm will be auctioned. Shaw Precision Guns will build a Mark VII custom rifle for the highest bidder, who will select the specifications from a long list of choices. This has a $900 reserve.

There will be more guns, artwork, gear, games, silent and live auctions.

AN ADIRONDACK AFFAIR

LONG LAKE--Get up close and personal with Emmy award-winning actress Martha Byrne and Emmy-nominated actress Ellen Dolan from the television serial As the World Turns at the Adirondack Affair VIP Reception at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.

Enjoy drinks and hors d'oeuvres as the two perform at a special Adirondack Affair Cabaret.

An All-Access Weekend Pass is $50, Reception & Cabaret $40 and Cabaret only $10.

The next day be part of an original mini soap opera filmed with Byrne or Dolan. Filming takes place throughout the day Saturday, Oct. 1.

Actors and non-actors of all levels are welcome. It costs $50 for the All-Access Weekend Pass or $20 for On-Location Filming only.

PHOTOS ON EXHIBIT

BLUE MT. LAKE--The Adirondack Lakes Center for The Arts National Juried Photography Exhibit runs through Sept. 24.

Diversity: Through Many Lenses features photographs from around the nation. Prizes awarded in: AC Best Photo, Nature, Animal, Black and White, Portrait and Alternate Process.

Stop by and vote for the people's choice award and win something from the raffle.

A Gallery Reception will be held Sept. 24 from 5:30-7 p.m.

Gallery hours are Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

GALLERY SHOWS

BLUE MT. LAKE--Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts_ here is hosting three gallery shows from Sept. 30 through Oct. 29.

_"Dreamscapes:" Prints by Martha Ives blends surrealism with whimsy, stunning colors and playful graphics.

"Contemporary Fiber Artist:" Rebecca Mustare and Hisami Taniguchi- Mustare uses plastic bags and needlework to create quilted images. Taniguchi creates sculptures from threads and cloth.

Video Performance Art: "Type 3 Toy"_ Video by Laura Kim_ captures the artist's interest in cultural adaptation and interaction with the self. "Type 3 Toy" includes Kim interacting with superheros such as Spiderman, utilizing graphics blended with performance.

A reception will be held Oct. 15 from 5-6 p.m.

FOOD

DIG INTO HAM

BLEECKER--Bleecker Community Church will hold its 52nd Annual Harvest Ham Dinner at the Church Hall on County Highway 112 here Saturday, Sept. 24, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

The dinner will feature a full menu of harvest vegetables and pies for dessert, including elderberry.

Tickets will be available at the door at $9 per adult and $4.50 per child ages 6 to 12. Ages 5 and under are admitted free.

PERFORMING ARTS

CASTING CALL GOES OUT

BLUE MT. LAKE--Be part of the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts' next holiday production. The Arts Center will host an open casting call for its production of Rogers & Hammerstein's timeless musical "Cinderella" Sept. 21 at Indian Lake Theater, Sept. 22 at Long Lake Town Hall and Sept. 23 at The Arts Center, all at 5 p.m.

Actors, young and old, are asked to prepare a song or just sing "Happy Birthday." All are welcome and anyone who is looking for a fun fall project is encouraged to stop by the Arts Center.

Rehearsals for "Cinderella" will start Oct. 2 with performances running throughout the Adirondacks from Nov. 25 through Dec. 10.

'THE LARAMIE PROJECT'

BLUE MT. LAKE--Come to the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts here Friday, Sept. 23, and Saturday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. for this fall's production of the award-winning play "The Laramie Project," by Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project_.

"The Laramie Project" chronicles the life of the town of Laramie in the year after the murder of Matthew Shephard with over 60 different people in their own words, from rural ranchers to university professors.

The result is a complex portrayal that dispels the simplistic media stereotypes and explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.

VISUAL ARTS

ADK. ART MOOSE HUNT

BLUE MT. LAKE--Adirondack Art Moose Hunt will be Saturday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

While traveling Route 28 between Indian Lake and Blue Mountain Lake be on the lookout for the elusive "Art" moose. These moose are created in the style of famous artists, such as Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso and Dali.

Sketch all four famous moose and bring them to the Arts Center here for a prize.

Moose Maps can be found at Indian Lake Theater, Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce or The Arts Center.

WORKSHOP & OPEN MIC

INDIAN LAKE-Members of the Indian Lake Library Writers Group invite everyone to join them for a writing workshop Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 1-4 p.m., led by Steve Coffman and Michael Czarnecki.

Bring work to share for ideas and suggestions or just for an audience.

Return for an "open mic" from 7-9 p.m. at the library. All are welcome.
