BIRDING

GO TO THE BIRDS

NEWCOMB—Join Northern New York Audubon President Charlotte Demers for a bird walk Saturday, Nov. 5, at Arbutus Lake here. Meet at Adirondack Interpretive Center, 5922 State Rt. 28N at 9 a.m.

Participants will hike a two-mile loop around the shore of Arbutus Lake in Huntington Wildlife Forest. This flat trail goes through mostly softwood and mixed wood forest. There is the possibility that red and white-winged crossbills will be in the softwoods along the trail.

SNOWMOBILE SAFETY

LAKE PLEASANT - A snowmobile safety course will be given from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Lake Pleasant Fire Hall. This program is sponsored by Pleasant Riders Snowmobilers and is free to anyone 10 years of age and older. To reserve a spot call Dick Eliezer at 548-3194.

GET A BARGAIN

SPECULATOR - Having trouble squeezing through the garage? Can’t find the kid’s favorite snowboard in the attic? Is the boat full of too much fishing gear? Uncle Harry’s old rifle will never be used again?

Sound like a dilemma? It’s not. Oak Mountain Ski Center here will hold a Sporting Goods Swap and Sale Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. New and used items from all sports and all seasons will be bartered, traded or sold.

Snowmobiles, ATVs, boats and other large items will be displayed in the parking area. Other items will be on tables rented inside for a low (fund-raising) charge of $25. Merchants are welcome to participate.

Set-up is 8-10 a.m. Food and beverages will be available.

CRAFTERS WANTED

IN LONG LAKE

 LONG LAKE—A call is out to all crafters and vendors who would like to have a booth at the Holiday Craft Fair sponsored by the Friends of the Long Lake Library on Saturday, Dec. 10.  The craft fair will be part of the town sponsored “Celebrate the Season” weekend, which will also feature open houses at businesses, homes and churches, as well as a concert. ‘NUTCRACKER’ RETURNS

OLD FORGE—Old Forge Ballet Company will present Jennifer Grapes-McIntyre and Darren McIntyre, international principal dancers, in the full-length ballet “The Nutcracker, Opus 71” in two performances Saturday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at The Strand Theatre here.

Grapes-McIntyre has completed her fourth season with the highly acclaimed Milwaukee Ballet. She recently won much praise for her original work, “Black Swan.”

After completing his fourth season with the Milwaukee Ballet McIntyre relocated to Chicago, where he founded DManagement International Dance Company.

There will be a reception after the evening performance. Tickets are $15 adults, $10 seniors and teens and free to children under age 12. LADIES RETREAT SET

WELLS—The Seventh Annual Wells Ladies Retreat will be Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wells Methodist Church on Main Street here. Registration will be from 9-9:30 a.m. and lunch will be provided at noon.

Jean Bisnett of Rensselaer will give a presentation titled, “Oh GOD … What’s Up?” She describes herself as having “an ordinary life touched by an extraordinary God!”

Karen Patterson, a guitarist and experienced worship leader from Fonda, will be the music leader. Kathy Kinberg of Schenectady specializes in Christian interpretive dance and singing.

There are no fees for either the event or the food, but a free-will offering will be taken to defray the speaker’s expenses. For more call Alice at 924-2220 or Janet at 924-7810.

Local churches are sponsoring this ecumenical event.

ADK. FLOOD RELIEF

INDIAN LAKE—Goodbye Irene, a concert for Adirondack flood relief, will be held Sunday, Nov. 13, starting at 2 p.m. at Indian Lake Theater on Main Street here. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 the day of the show. Call (518) 648-5950.

Roy Hurd, Peggy Lynn, Martha Gallagher, Dan Berggren, The Beeline Ramblers and Tom Akstens will perform, with special guests Julie Robinson-Robards, Dennis Gallagher and Carolyn Bischoff.

THREE NEW EXHIBITS

BLUE MT. LAKE—Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts here announces three new exhibits running from Nov. 4 to Dec. 17.

“Expressions Inside” ?by consumers of Sunmount and Dayhab in Tupper Lake and Long Lake? showcases selected artworks in various mediums.

“Dreamscapes” are water media paintings by Darcy Scott that make viewers feel as if they are stepping into another world, one of surrealistic qualities. Wooden stools symbolize humans and how they interact with nature.

“This Beautiful World”?is a compilation of photographs by Robert Radin collected from around the world. The artist’s vision is “To Show the World the World” with an emphasis on the journey of life.

Gallery hours are Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A gallery reception will be held Dec. 17 from 5-6 p.m. For more call 352-7715 or visit the website at www.adirondackarts.org.

NORTH CREEK—The Johnsburg Fine Arts Group and local Polymer Clay Artist, Helene Goodman, will exhibit at the Widlund Gallery at Tannery Pond Community Center from Oct. 29 - Nov. 20. Joining in this exhibit are a few pieces from Johnsburg High School students.

Membership in Johnsburg Fine Arts is open to anyone, any age, and any level of ability. Classes, which are funded in part by the Town of Johnsburg, are held weekly on Tuesday mornings 9:30 a.m. until noon at the Wevertown Community Center at the intersection of routes 8 and 28. Watercolor artist Kate Hartley leads drawing and painting lessons, and advises participants on their individual projects on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Participants use a variety of painting media; oils, acrylics, watercolor, and more. Come explore the artist within you.

TIME FOR TURKEY

INDIAN LAKE—Indian Lake Methodist Church will hold its annual Election Day Turkey Dinner at the church Tuesday, Nov. 8. Take-outs start at 4:30 p.m. and sit-down dinners at 5 p.m.

The menu is roast turkey, gravy, dressing, mashed potatoes, vegetables, rolls, beverages and apple or pumpkin pie. Adults pay $9 each, children ages 4-11 $4 each. Children under age 4 eat free.

POT LUCK DINNER

BLUE MT. LAKE—The Blue Mountain Lake United Methodist Church will serve an Election Day Pot Luck Dinner from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8.

The church is on Rt. 28 across from the post office. Baked ham, macaroni and cheese, rolls and beverages will be provided. Bring a vegetable dish, salad or dessert to share.

Donations will be accepted for the Community Action Food Pantry.

COME FOR TURKEY

SPECULATOR—The women of Grace United Methodist Church here are busy planning for their Traditional Election Day Turkey Dinner. It will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 5-7 p.m. in the dining room in Oak Mountain Ski Center Lodge.

The menu will include turkey dinner with all the trimmings, topped off with a variety of homemade pies and cakes. Take-out dinners will be available starting at 4:30 p.m.

The cost of the dinner is by donation; all proceeds will go toward the support of local, regional, national and international mission projects supported by Grace United Methodist Women.

NEEDLEWORK

QUILTS UNLIMITED OPENS

OLD FORGE—-The 25th Annual Quilts Unlimited Exhibition at View on Rt. 28 here runs to Nov. 30. This competitive exhibition features both traditional and eclectic quilts and wall hangings.

Polar Bear Ski Club’s Consignment Sale

OLD FORGE—McCauley Mountain Ski Center will host the Annual Polar Bear Ski Club’s Consignment Sale on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 am to Noon. Come find great deals on new or used ski and snowboard equipment. Items for consignment should be dropped off at McCauley Mountain between 8 am and 9 am that morning.

The Ski Patrol will be demonstrating ski lift evacuation procedures. Trail maintenance volunteers would be appreciated, but hand tools only, please!

During the Consignment Sale, purchase your seasonal ski pass at the Early Bird rate, and receive your pass that day. The preseason sale price ends on Dec. 1. New this year, the Ticket Office at McCauley is open Tuesdays and Thursdays (closed Thanksgiving), from 10 am until 4 pm, for the purchase of seasonal passes and gift certificates. Do your Christmas shopping early!

PHOTOGRAPHY

PHOTO FESTIVAL SET

INDIAN LAKE—Indian Lake Theater will host a community photo festival Saturday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m., “The Adirondack Feeling,” led by professional photographer Mark Bowie.

Everyone, regardless of age or experience, is invited to submit up to five photographs by emailing them to photo@indianlaketheater.org. There is no fee, but photos must be submitted by Oct. 21. Applicants will be notified a week before the show that their work has been chosen to be included.

Admission is $5. Bowie will comment on the photographs, and prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories. Bowie will then present some of his own photographs, and will answer questions about technique and working in the industry.

Bowie is a frequent contributor to Adirondack Life, Adirondack Explorer and many other publications.

BEGINNING STAINED GLASS

MAYFIELD—Sacandaga Valley Arts Network has arranged a Beginning Stained Glass workshop at JeffArt Studio here for Nov. 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Artist Jeff Meuwissen will teach students how to make a stained glass Christmas ornament using the copper-foil method. A completed liability waiver is required prior to class participation.

A TISKET, A TASKET

HOPE—Sacandaga Valley Arts Network has arranged for Laura Ginter of Basket Thyme to teach a Sleigh Basket Workshop Nov. 17-19 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hope Valley Lodge, 163 Hope Falls Road, Hope.

Students will make an adorable basket that has a wooden sleigh bottom and a round and flat reed cradle finished by a rolled rim. Call Ginter at 863-4145 for workshop information.
