Two interested in school board seat

By PETE KLEIN

INDIAN LAKE - Two people are interested in filling a vacant seat on the Indian Lake Central School District Board of Education: Jane Willemsen and Robert Lewin.

The seat became vacant when Brian Wells left the BOE to assume his duties as the new town supervisor.

Willemsen and Lewin are both interested in being appointed to the seat, which will be on the ballot during the May school budget vote. The board agreed to interview both later this month and make a decision after the interviews.

Voters will also be asked to approve the purchase of a new bus.

The BOE adopted a resolution Tuesday, Jan. 17, to purchase a new 48-passenger bus for about $99,000 less a trade-in of about $34,000 for Bus 58, which has almost 140,000 miles on the odometer.

In other bus news, Transportation Coordinator George Virgil reported the bus fleet recently passed inspection with flying colors. “We received a 100 percent rating on our buses,” he said.

Athletic Director John Rathbun reported the school’s girls’ varsity soccer team received the Section 7 Sports-manship Award from Brine Sports Co. This, Rathbun said, means the team will receive six championship soccer balls, six soccer bags and an air pump.

Concerning basketball, The Lady Orange varsity team’s record to date is 8-1. The team is currently in first place in the Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference Section VII Class D South Division.

Buildings and Grounds Supervisor Jeremy Monthony is hoping for money in the 2012/13 school budget to replace an 11-year-old John Deere tractor, but the cost won’t be known until the state contract price becomes available later this month or next.

Monthony provided the board with a five-year maintenance plan that includes some window replacement and sidewalk work.

The board will meet early next month because of winter recess. Its next meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 14, starting at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria.
