Robert Lewin chosen to join school board

By PETE KLEIN

Express News Staff

INDIAN LAKE - Robert Lewin will take the oath of office at the next meeting of the Indian Lake Central School District Board of Education Tuesday, Feb. 14.

The BOE held a special meeting Thursday, Jan. 26, to hold interviews and select a replacement for Brian Wells, who resigned from the board after being elected town supervisor.

Two candidates, Jane Willemsen and Lewin, were interviewed in open session. After completing the interviews, the board went into executive session to discuss the candidates.

Coming out of executive session, the board announced it had decided on Lewin.

Superintendent Mark Brand said, “It was a tough decision for the board.”

BOE President Jon Voorhees agreed and said, “Both were well qualified.”

The story isn’t over. The appointment is only temporary. When the school budget comes up for a vote in May, voters will also be asked to vote their choice to fill the vacancy created by Wells’ resignation.

The choice could be Lewis, Willemsen or another person who files a petition to run for the seat. The term would be for three years, to complete Wells’ unexpired term.

Also, Dave Harrington’s five-year term will be expiring June 30 and up for a vote. Harrington could run again and anyone wishing to seek his seat may file a petition. Write-ins are also allowed.
