Seniors invited to send Arbor Day poem

LAKE PLEASANT - The Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District has announced its Fifth Annual Arbor Day Poetry Contest for Seniors.

Participants at least 50 years old living in Hamilton County may compose a Tanka poem based on the theme Trees in Nature.

The Tanka is a Japanese poem of five lines. Lines one and three have five syllables while lines two, four and five have seven syllables. Visit for an example poem.

The poem must be original, hand-written or typed. One entry is allowed per person.

On the back include name, address and phone number, and address of Senior Citizen Center or Meal or Nutrition Site, if applicable. Mail poems to HCSWCD, POB 166, Lake Pleasant NY 12108 by April 12.

Certificates will be awarded all participants. A special prize will be awarded to the first place winner. Contact (518) 548-3991 or with questions.
