Wells has new fees for building permits

WELLS -- A new building permit fee schedule went into effect April 1 in the Town of Wells.

Previously, fees ranged from $5 to $50 based on a project's estimated cost. For instance, a project estimated to cost up to $500 required a $5 fee. The highest fee of $50 was for projects of $90,000 or more.

New flat fees were adopted Monday, March 10. They are as follows.

-- New construction, modular and manufactured Home placement (includes Certificate of Occupancy and septic system inspection): $.15 per square foot, $100 minimum.

-- Additions, decks and porches, structural alterations and repairs: $.15 per sq. ft., $50 minimum.

-- Miscellaneous structures (fences over six feet in height, ramps, stairs, etc.): $25.

-- Demolition Permit: $25 (was $10).

-- Septic system installation or alteration: $50.

-- Re-inspection (if project fails first inspection): $50.

-- Permit renewal: 50 percent of original fee.

-- Extension of unexpired permit: $25 per inspection.

No permits are required to erect a storage building of 80 square feet or smaller with no electricity.


-- Lake Algonquin Hydroelectric Plant had no revenues for February; expenditures totaled $287.01. Year-to-date revenues are $11,129, with expenditures of $1,796.

-- The board voted to renew the radio license contract that enables two-way radio communication with the Water Building. Com-Tech Electronics, Rensselaer, will draw it up at a cost not to exceed $200. Radio license contracts are good for 10 years.

-- The State Police satellite office here is now manned full-time, as of March 13. Troopers here cover southern Hamilton County. Individuals still should call 911 for emergencies, and there is a call box on the Municipal Office Building.

-- Wells Volunteer Ambulance Corps made six calls during February. Five were medical emergencies and one was stand-by. Ambulance Service of Fulton County assisted with three. Members volunteered 37.7 man-hours. The ambulance traveled 390 miles, using 33.5 gallons of diesel fuel.

-- A letter from Wells Central School District Board of Education commends bus mechanic Jim Warner's job performance; the letter noted 100 percent of the buses used by WCS passed inspection.

The Wells Town Board will next meet Monday, April 14.
