INLET - A privately owned seaplane being operated by Thomas Payne crashed while landing on 7th Lake here Tuesday, April 23.

Payne owns Payne’s Seaplanes & Air Service on 7th Lake. An employee said Sunday that he broke a hip and ribs in the accident, but is recovering at University Hospital in Syracuse.

The same person said the engine cut out just as Payne was landing on the water and the plane hit at the water’s edge.

The accident near Jones Road happened at 10 a.m., according to Inlet Police Department Chief Andrew D. Kalil.

Payne, 50, was treated by Inlet Volunteer Ambulance Squad members and transported to a Syracuse hospital by a LifeNet helicopter.

The investigation has been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration, Kalil said in a short press release.

Town of Webb Police, New York State Police and Inlet Hose Company assisted at the scene.
