LONG LAKE - The Long Lake Town Board has agreed to sell the former Schiffman property on Lake Eaton, but will keep part for possible future access to Lake Eaton for a lake water supply.

The board will set a minimum price and advertise for sealed bids. A tentative bid opening date has been set for July 20.

The decision is subject to a permissive referendum. This means a petition could be filed with the town clerk requesting a special vote on the decision.

The former family camp was donated to the town in December 2007. At that time the over four acres with camp was valued at about $1 million. Barry and Wo Schiffman donated the property in memory of Jane Negus-de Wys, Wo Schiffman’s mother.

A condition of the donation is a memorial to Negus-de Wys. If the property is sold the town is required to continue to maintain the memorial, naming any new structure or property acquired with the proceeds of the sale for her.

SCRAP METAL

The board also agreed May 30 to try hauling and selling the scrap metal it accumulates at the transfer station rather than continuing to have an independent contractor pick up and sell the metal.

The board believes the town can earn more money doing the transporting and sale itself.

Supervisor Clark Seaman said, “We will see how it works. If there are problems, we can put it out to bid.”

OTHER BUSINESS

• The $88,736 in this year’s Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) funds will be used to blacktop Kickerville Road.

• New York State Electric & Gas will run a power line up to the wells on Stanton Hill.

• The board denied, as it did last year, a request for the town to provide a portable toilet in Raquette Lake for use by customers of Bird’s Marina. The board feels the town should not provide porta-potties for private businesses.

The Town Board will next meet Wednesday, June 13, starting at 7:30 p.m. in Town Hall.
