LLCS announces top students

LONG LAKE - Long Lake Central School Guidance Counselor Tisha White is pleased to announce the recipients of this year's valedictorian and salutatorian awards are Margaret Smith and Jillianna Miller.

In a graduating class of 10 seniors, Margaret is the valedictorian with a current average of 97.76. Margaret is graduating with an Advanced Designation Regents Diploma with Honors.

She plans on attending Hamilton College and is interested in English, history, art and environmental studies. Margaret's extracurricular activities have included student council secretary, National Honor Society, soccer, basketball, softball, the Green Team, Living Able musicals, class secretary, Science Olympiad, band, jazz band and choir.

She has participated in various workshops such as the New England Young Writer's Conference, the Bullying Peer Education Program, the Girls' Leadership Workshop, the High School Writing Retreat in Old Forge, the Adirondack Youth Climate Summit, Envirothon and the Champlain College Young Writers' Conference.

She has been a frequent participant in music festivals sponsored through school such as CASMA, All County Music Festivals and the Northeast Instrumental Music Festivals.

She has been an active volunteer working for such organizations as the National Park Service, the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, the Long Lake Strategic Planning Committee, the Adirondack Museum and Long Lake Parks, Recreation and Tourism Dept. She has also volunteered at many activities and events held through the school.

Additional awards received by Margaret include being a Great Adirondack Poetry Contest winner, 5th Team State All-Star in Basketball, Musician of the Year, NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Awards, The Post-Star All-State Second Team All-Star in Basketball and the Lake Placid Center for the Arts Student Art Show Honorable Mention for Drawing.

Margaret is the daughter of Mason Smith and Hallie Bond of Long Lake.


Jillianna is the class salutatorian with a current average of 91.55. In addition to her Regents diploma, Jill is graduating with a Career and Technology Education Certificate in Cosmetology with High Honors and intends to work in that field after graduation.

Jill is a member of the National Technical Honor Society. Her extracurricular activities have included soccer, basketball, student council, National Honor Society and yearbook.

Jill has been an active volunteer throughout high school working for such organizations as Toys for Tots, Teens for Jeans, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Maine Garden Club and various events and activities with both St. Henry's Catholic Church and the Wesleyan Church of Long Lake.

She has also volunteered for various school events such as Adopt a Highway and Community Pride Clean-Up Day. Jill is the daughter of Rick and Kim Miller of Long Lake.

Congratulations to both students. The school community is very proud of their accomplishments.
