Wells Senior Citizens Club By President Alice Megargle

Tuesday, June 18, 2013 - Updated: 9:35 PM

The Wells Senior Citizens Club held its annual meeting June 12 with 33 members present. President Alice Megargle gave a review of the activities that took place during the previous year.

Officers were elected for the coming year. They are President Alice Megargle, Vice President George Lancaster, Secretary Sandy Orr, Treasurer Betty Lou Orr and Assistant Secretary / Treasurer Grace Lizak. Dolores Margies and Edna Rew were thanked for their service on the board the previous year.

The By-laws Committee recommended six changes. All six passed with more than the required two-thirds vote. One significant change is the addition of a "good standing" requirement.

"Good standing" requires a member to attend at least two business meetings each year, which entitles them to receive any discounts offered by the club. Another amendment opens membership to any person who has reached the age of 55, adheres to the objectives of the club and pays their yearly dues, currently set at $10 a year.

The other amendments streamline language and clarify intent.

Bob Megargle from the Travel Committee gave a report on the trips planned for this summer and fall:

-- July 17 - Lake George Dinner Theater for "Moonlight and Magnolias."

-- Aug. 8 - Mystery Trip: the trip planners know, but they're not telling.

-- Aug. 21 - Cruise the Erie Canal with lunch at Canal Side Inn.

-- Sept. 26 - All About Trains: Ride the Saratoga and North Creek Railway for 52 miles.

-- Oct. 8-10 - Lancaster and Hershey, Pa. to see "Noah" at Sight & Sound Theater.

-- Dec. 4-6 - Niagara Falls, Canada, for the "Festival of Lights."

The Sacandaga or Broadalbin senior clubs are sponsoring some of these trips.

Wells Superintendent of Highways Clay Earley gave an update on the recently adopted rules and regulations for recycling in Hamilton County. He was able to answer many questions about the recent changes.

The next function for the club will be a potluck supper Wednesday, June 26, at 5 p.m. at the Wells Meal Site. Following the supper, Dr. Russell Cecil, M.D., Ph.D., from Mohawk Valley Orthopedics will speak.

The next regular business meeting will take place July 10 at 12:45 p.m. at the meal site. For information about the club or trips call Bob or Alice at 924-2220.
