SPECULATOR -- It appears John VanBuiten's offer to donate his collection of small buildings, best known as Route 66, to the Village of Speculator will become a reality.

Plans call for it to be relocated to between the pavilion and Sacandaga Pathway at the village ball field.

The village Board of Trustees accepted the donation June 23, with one condition: the village will have the right to remove the buildings if efforts to prevent them from being vandalized are unsuccessful.

The village has money in its budget to purchase and install security cameras, but only time will tell if the buildings can be adequately protected.

The move and set up of the buildings isn't expected to start until fall. It will be a joint effort of the village, town and county highway departments.

Superintendent of Highways Roger Blanchard has been on sick leave for well over a month, but attended the meeting to report he expects to soon have three quotes for the purchase of new dump box for a 2001 International truck.

According to the latest note from his doctor, Blanchard said he expected to be back to work by Monday, June 27, and was anxious to return to the job.

In other business, the board has received a letter of resignation from Land Use Code Enforcement Officer Spencer Tracy, and the board will now begin a search for a replacement.

The Board of Trustees will next meet Monday, July 14, starting at 7 p.m. in Village Hall.
