Inlet boy gives up birthday gifts to gift others with clean waters

INLET - Cullen Rose of Inlet was looking out at the snow this past winter when he commented on how blessed we are to live in an area that has such an abundance of clean water.

When informed that many parts of the world do not have access to such water, Cullen asked what could he do?

At the same time Niccolls Memorial Church was exploring avenues for its mission work as well as new directions for its summer educational programs.

Enter Living Waters for the World, a non-profit that has constructed over 529 water filtration systems in 24 countries, providing 128,000 people with clean water each day.

Living Waters teams travel to areas that need a small clean water source and help local communities build and maintain sustainable filtration systems. Hygiene education and training in the operation and maintenance of the system are important components of this program, which requires about $2,500 to install a neighborhood community water system.

Cullen volunteered to forego all his birthday presents if the money could be used for Living Water programs. In response, the Niccolls Mission Committee agreed to match funds raised up to $500.

The Vacation Bible School has also committed to a clean waters curriculum, and Ken and Joanne Strike recently attended Clean Water U to become part of a mission education and construction team and will be assisting in a water system project in Honduras.

Anyone interested in supporting Living Waters for the World and helping Cullen raise enough funds for a water filtration system can contact Niccolls Memorial at (315) 369-3475 or send a donation to Niccolls Memorial Church - Living Waters, POB 605, Old Forge NY 13420.
