Hamilton County readers will be heading for the Amazon

INDIAN LAKE - Indian Lake Theater is teaming up with libraries across the Central Adirondacks for the next book in their “One County, One Book” program, Hamilton County Reads.

This summer’s selection is “The Unconquered: In Search of the Amazon’s Last Uncontacted Tribes,” by author and National Geographic journalist Scott Wallace. “The Unconquered” is a page-turning adventure story about a recent journey deep into the Amazon in search of one of the planet’s last uncontacted indigenous tribes.

In this gripping first-person account of adventure and survival the author is sent by National Geographic to follow a 34-man team into the Amazon’s uncharted depths, discovering the rainforest’s secrets while moving ever closer to a possible encounter with the mysterious flecheiros - or “People of the Arrow” - a seldom-glimpsed tribe of deft archers known to defend their lands with showers of deadly arrows before melting back into the forest shadows.

“It’s an exciting read,” says Hamilton County Reads Coordinator Ben Strader. “There are a lot of explorers in the Adirondacks, and I think they are really going to enjoy heading deep into the Amazon jungle with this book, even if they do it while sitting in a lean-to next to an Adirondack lost pond.”

ILT Director Danielle Shaw adds, “The book even has a cool trailer, which is fitting for a book series co-hosted by a theater. It’s going to be a dynamic and interactive multi-media presentation.”

The book trailer and more information about the author can be found at www.scottwallace.com

Copies of “The Unconquered” will be available at libraries across Hamilton County all summer: Lake Pleasant, Wells, Indian Lake, Long Lake, Raquette Lake and Inlet.

The highlight of this summer’s “big read” will be a special evening at Indian Lake Theater Monday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m. with a live appearance, questions and answers and more with Scott Wallace.

Sebastian Junger, author of “The Perfect Storm,” calls “The Unconquered,” “A riveting and brilliant book blessed with the pacing of a novel but carrying the great weight of world events. This is journalism at its very, very best.”

Previous books in the Hamilton County Reads 2012 series are “Mudbound” and “The Dirty Life.”
