Speculator/ Lake Pleasant Garden Club is wrapping up its sixth year; we completed 1,000 volunteer hours this season.

Our 34 members are dedicated to enhancing our little community. Speculator Park at Osborne Point has matured and its lush gardens (filled with all donated perennials) attract local residents and tourists alike. We hope to almost double the size of this gem if the Village of Speculator is able to acquire the vacant lot next door through donations.

Our gardeners fall into three categories. The "BUDS" dig, plant, weed and water and have specific assignments. They are Cheryl Paestella, Elaine Brophy, Georgine Rausch, Judy Nelson, Laura Hultmark, Mary Ann Hughes, Mitzi Fox, Nancy Tobiessen, Ragnhild Holmquist, Sue Swift, Lynne Brown, Josena Turner, Joyce Nielsen, Heidi Reis, Linda Walters, Jane Kiebitz, Robin Berruti, Laurel Riggles, Angela Anderson, Kelly Ann Tommell and Linda Lawson.

The "ROOTS" share their expertise, their homes for meetings and substitute for BUDS. They are Gloria Fant, Mary Finkle, Peg LaFontaine, Connie Hume, Grace Camoin, Carol Waller, Cathy Visscher and Joan Schaffer.

The "SEEDS" are BUDS who help merchants start new gardens. They are Judy Nelson, Mitzi Fox and Lynne Brown.

Our advisors help us a great deal: Bob Camoin, Caitlin Stewart Seifts (Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District) and Nancy Welch (Cornell Cooperative Extension). Last but not least our all-important "CEO of Hydration" is Arthur Brown.

This season we added a perennial garden at the health center, redesigned the museum gardens and added a planter at Timberline Cafe and Bakery. We have plans to enlarge the gardens on the triangle at The Four Corners and add new gardens at the pavilion behind the courthouse.

Thank you all for your support. Special thanks to the anonymous "garden angel" who repaired the watering hose behind the bank; all the merchants who are responsible for our barrels and benches; and Lake Pleasant / Sacandaga Association for its continued support, the flowers at the triangle every year and the Speculator Park sign.

Thanks also to our village and town boards and highway departments, especially Roger Blanchard and Leo Desrochers and their crews.

Watch for the daffodils in the spring, especially the new ones at Osborne Point donated by Gloria Fant.
