Obituary - 01/11/2012

Edward Klena
December 26, 2011

Edward Klena, age 94, of Wells, peacefully went to be with the love of his life Marion with his family at his side Monday morning December 26, 2011.
Born in Johnstown on May 9, 1917 he was the son of the late Victor Klena and Magdalina Jarabek Klena.
Edward worked at George Johns Gloves, Gould’s Department Store, Klena Brothers Morse Bakery, Independent Leather, and the Town of Wells until his retirement; he also was owner and operator of Country Ed’s Firewood.
He was a past member of the Pine Tree Rifle Club.
Ed enjoyed Deer Hunting in Perkins Clearing and fishing on the Jessup River where he honeymooned with his beloved wife. He loved the Adirondacks and had probably fished every pond there.
Ed spent many summers with his family and friends at their A-frame camp in Wells, NY which he built himself, he and his brothers also built their hunting camp known as Buckhorn Lodge in West Fulton, NY where they spent many years hunting deer together. He also enjoyed rabbit hunting, raising turkeys, and even bought a Christmas tree lot with his brother-in-law Ted Kralovic and sold many trees that brought joy to local families during the holidays.
In 1979 he and Marion bought their dream home; a beautiful log cabin in Hope, NY where they spent many years together enjoying the wildlife and selling wood to campers, many of whom became life-long friends. He loved handing out candy to the kids and on occasion would entertain folks by playing his accordion or watching them play the ring game. To this day he allowed campers to come and help themselves to wood and just “leave the money in the can”. He also had a great appreciation and love for his animals which included not only his dogs and cats, but the many deer, turkeys and chipmunks that visited him and he especially loved feeding the birds.
He had a passion for cars, especially fast ones, and taking his wife for rides on his Indian and Harley Davidson motorcycles.
He will be remembered by many as he sat in his favorite chair in his front window enjoying the beauty of nature, the traffic that went by, and if a car beeped, you were assured a friendly wave from him.
He was a hard working man that was proud to provide for and take care of his dear family and lived life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed by many but the memories he helped make will bring smiles to all.
On July 15, 1945 he was united in marriage to Marion I. Knapp Klena they were married for 47 years until her passing on November 30, 1992.
He is survived by his two beloved sons, Edward E. Klena and James V. Klena, as well as his daughter-in-law, Lisa Maderic-Klena, and his three “grand-dogs” Zeta, Zorro, and Rocky; two brothers Stephen Klena and Richard Klena of Johnstown; one sister Emily Kralovic of Johnstown; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brothers Paul Klena, Ernest Klena and Victor Klena; his sisters Josephine Serviss and Margaret Ralbovsky.
Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, December 29th at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown, with the Rev. Jerry Kaufman presiding.
Interment was in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Wells Volunteer Ambulance Co. Condolences to the family may be made online by visiting the website at www.barterdonnan.com.
