MORELAND HILLS, Ohio--Jere Hall Brophy, 79, of Moreland Hills, Ohio, passed away Aug. 23, 2013 in the Adirondack Mountains in New York state. He died of natural causes, with his wife of 57 years, Elaine, by his side.
Son of the late Gerald and Dorothy Brophy, Jere is survived by his sister Elizabeth Gilmore (Roger) of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; daughter Jennifer Paduan (Jeffrey) of Monterey, Calif.; daughter Carolyn Wojciechowicz (Michael “Tim”) of Princeton Junction, N.J.; son Jere W. Brophy (Lynne) of Waitsfield, Vt.; and five grandchildren: Kristyn, Rebecca and Matthew Wojciechowicz and Julia and Nathaniel “Nate” Brophy.
Jere was born March 11, 1934 in Schenectady, N.Y. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor of science degree in both Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering in 1956 and a master’s degree and doctorate in Metallurgical Engineering in 1957 and 1958, respectively. He and Elaine married in Lansing, Mich. Aug. 18, 1956.
Jere worked as an assistant professor of metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; as a manager in the Paul D. Merica Research Lab, manager and director of the Research and Development Center, and director of the Advanced Technology Initiation with the International Nickel Company, Ltd, NY (INCO); as vice president and director of the Materials and Manufacturing Technology Center Aircraft Components Group, vice president of Manufacturing and Materials Development Automotive Sector and vice president of Engineering Automotive Sector with TRW Inc, Cleveland, Ohio; and as vice president of Technology with Brush Wellman, Cleveland, Ohio.
Jere was active in music, church life, sailing, boating, hiking, woodworking, railroad history and intellectual pursuits throughout his life.
A memorial service will take place at a later date.
