Ruth Langford Dillon

December 24, 2012

Ruth Langford Dillon died at the Forest At Duke, December 24th, 2012. She was 91.

Ruth was born and raised in Yonkers, New York. She attended Dobbs Masters School and graduated from Pine Manor Junior College. Ruth married the late John C Dillon in 1942. Over the course of their marriage, they made their home in Yonkers, Chappaqua and Raquette Lake, New York. In 1994, after John had passed away in 1991, Ruth relocated to the Forest At Duke in Durham, NC, where she greatly enjoyed her friends and the staff.

Ruth performed extensive volunteer work. In her years in Westchester NY, she volunteered with the Chappaqua School System. At Northern Westchester Hospital she assisted and ultimately supervised the volunteer staff. In the 1980s she was a docent at Katonah Museum of Art. There she created and assisted in producing Transformations, Shelters and Forever Wild, the Adirondack Experience, which toured throughout New York State. She was a docent at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center, NY. When she moved to North Carolina she continued her volunteer participation at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, the Duke Chapel, and Duke University Hospital.

Ruth and John traveled the world whenever and wherever the opportunity presented. While not her first, or maybe her best trip, she is lovingly remembered for shoving four children, age 9 to 16, into a stationwagon in the summer 1959, and spending the next two months camping and driving across the US. After John's death, Ruth continued her travels with devoted friends and family until her death.

Over her life, Ruth grew to love the Adirondacks and its people. Birthplace to her husband, fortress in life, the Adirondacks, and the love and effort she invested there, are her legacy to family and friends.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband John C Dillon, her son, Lt. Geoffrey Arnold Dillon, and her daughter, Martha Langford Stothers. She is survived by her loving twin sister Hope Langford Turney of Los Angeles, California, her daughter Dr. Hope Caldwell Dillon-Jones of Providence, Rhode Island, son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Karen Dillon of Juneau, Alaska, son-in-law Hilton Hedley Stothers Jr. of Bronxville, NY; grandchildren Geoff Jones and Leila (Craig Dean); Zachary (Amy McKinnon), Callahan, and Heather Dillon; Ruth ( Mike Dolan), Sarah, and Hedley (Elena Smetanina) Stothers; great grandchildren Sophia and Gordon Dean; Gwen and Patrick Dolan; Arina Stothers and Oskar Dillon. She leaves a large and loving family of relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held this summer at Raquette Lake, New York.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Raquette Lake Fire Department, PO Box 160, Raquette Lake, New York 13436.
