Twins are Long Lake royalty

LONG LAKE -- For the first time ever, two women were the royalty at the Long Lake Winter Carnival.

And not just any two women, but twin sisters Carolyn Huloboski and Kay McGuire, who just happened to be celebrating their 80th birthday when crowned princesses at Long Lake’s annual Winter Carnival Saturday, Jan. 18, sponsored by Moonlighters Snowmobile Club and the Town of Long Lake.

Another difference this year was canceling the parade of snowmobiles because of the lack of snow. A third difference was the perfect weather, not counting the lack of snow. The day was mostly sunny with very little wind and temperatures holding in the upper 20s.

A large crowd turned up to watch the increasingly popular cardboard box sled races down the ski hill. This year was the third for the races in Long Lake and the second for the Adirondack Cardboard Sled Racing Circuit.

The Laporte Family with Military Jeep, Ruby Lewin, and The Man From Blue (Bob Lewin) all advanced on the circuit.

The communities of Old Forge, Inlet, Indian Lake and Speculator all have cardboard sled racing scheduled between now and late February.

The Long Lake Volunteer Fire Department provided free hot dogs, chili and popcorn, and the sledding hill and ice rink were open throughout the day.

Other popular events included the adult golf drive, one-shot basketball, kids’ games, the ladies’ fry pan toss and the broomball tournament. Cash prizes were awarded for all events. Fireworks rounded out the day.
