SPECULATOR -- An exciting week is coming up, starting with Winter Carnival at Oak Mountain Ski Center here Feb. 15-16.
Start Saturday with a Pancake Breakfast from 8-10 a.m. before hitting the slopes. Then get artistic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. making an entry for the Snow Sculpture Contest.
Snow Dodge Ball starts at 11 a.m. and the Kids' Egg Race at noon. The Scavenger Hunt on the Mountain runs from 1-2:30 p.m., followed by the Frisbee Throwing Competition at 2 p.m. and the Kid's Competition Course at 3 p.m.
Then it's time to warm up inside at the Flavor Fest: Death by Chocolate Dessert Competition from 2-4 p.m. Judges will choose winners in each of three categories (Cakes & Pies; Cookies, Bar Cookies & Brownies; Candies) and there will be a People's Choice winner too.
The sugar rush should provide energy for the Tug Of War at 5 p.m. and the Kayak Slalom at 6 p.m.
Evening entertainment is live music by Jason and Nick of Floodwood from 7-11 p.m. and the Torchlight Parade at 8 p.m. followed by fireworks.
More fun activities are planned for Sunday, starting with the Hula Hoop 'til you Drop Challenge at 10 a.m. The Three-Legged Race starts at noon and the Human Dog Sled Competition at 2 p.m.
The snow sculptures will be judged at 2:30 p.m.
The Show Us What You Got Talent Show runs from 3:30-6 p.m. with an intermission from 4-4:30 p.m. for the Winter Carnival Coronation (sign up by phone at (518) 548-3606 or at the ticket window).
The weekend fun leads into the Presidents' Week holiday, when Oak will be open all week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The holiday hoopla continues Saturday, Feb. 22, with the Dummy Big Air Competition at 1 p.m., the Ski Patrol Fundraiser Spaghetti Dinner and Raffle from 5-7 p.m., night skiing until 7 p.m., Kids Movie Night from 5-7 p.m. and live music by Cosmic Jackson from 7-11 p.m.
