As a resident of the Town of Lake Pleasant and Speculator, I take great pride in what the community has to offer. The intent of this letter is to bring attention to the Lake Pleasant Library Expansion Project.
In 2005, the library expanded to include a reading and children's area. By 2011, the necessity to transition into a digital library of the 21st century emerged. As we move into the technology age, the way people interact with the library and the services it offers will change.
The Library Board of Trustees, with the approval of the Town Board, began planning for the expansion which will allow the library to embrace new information technologies, provide increased children and adult programs, increase handicap accessibility and expand internet usage. Approval was based on the fact that no increase in taxpayer dollars would be used to fund this expansion.
The intent of this letter is not to justify the decision to expand our library. The intent is to increase awareness to support this valuable resource.
Some may believe what we have is "sufficient" or that libraries will become obsolete. I would hope, however, that they would support those who do utilize the library and take pride in the fact that we are moving into a new era of transition where many more members of the community will benefit.
The Friends of the Library Board has decided not to take the lead in fund-raising for the expansion. As explained in the brochure mailed to residents, they will accept donations for the expansion and the brick campaign. They also have received grants applied for in their name.
A fund-raising committee has started planning events and information sessions to increase awareness of the expansion project. We need the support of the community to make this a success.
We would appreciate any financial support to help us with this project. Donations can be sent to the Lake Pleasant Library Building Fund, PO Box 799, Lake Pleasant NY 12108.
