The Indian Lake/Long Lake girls’ basketball team advanced to the semi-finals of the Section VII tournament Saturday, Feb. 25, with a win over Crown Point. The game between the third seeded Orange and sixth seeded Panthers was rescheduled from Friday due to inclement weather.

IL/LL, ranked 15th among New York State’s Class D teams, opened the game with full court pressure, causing havoc for the Crown Point offense. The Orange had a 13-7 lead after the first eight minutes of play.

In the second quarter, Crown Point chipped away at the lead to tie the game 19-19. Abby Darling rallied The Orange by nailing two 15-foot jumpers and blocking a Crown Point shot attempt. Sydney Hinckley then sank a five-foot jump shot followed by a Crown Point free throw to end the first half with IL/LL leading 25-20.

After the break, Crown Point’s full court defense unsettled The Orange offense. IL/LL scored their first basket of the quarter with four minutes remaining on their way to a seven-point quarter. Crown Point had their own offensive struggles, scoring only five points in the quarter. Heading into the final quarter, IL/LL maintained the lead at 32-25.

Jessica Bain powered IL/LL early in the fourth quarter to set the tone for the final eight minutes of play. With just over a minute of play expired, Bain made a steal, dribbled the length of the floor and connected on a lay-up. One minute later, she scored on a reverse lay-up for another Orange bucket. She followed that up 11 seconds later with another lay-up to give IL/LL a 38-25 lead.

With 4:15 remaining in the game and a score of 40-27, Crown Point came out of a time out to apply full court pressure once again. IL/LL kept their composure on their way to the victory.

A bucket by Darling and Shannon Farrell as well as a free throw from Bain and Farrell gave The Orange six more points in the quarter. Tenacious team defense from IL/LL held Crown Point to five points in the quarter.

Shannon Farrell was the leading scorer for The Orange with 12 points. Abby Darling had a versatile game with nine points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

IL/LL was to play number two seed Westport at AuSable Valley yesterday, Feb. 28. The Section VII Class D finals are scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, March 1, at the SUNY Plattsburgh Field House.
