LAKE PLEASANT -- Snowmobilers are seeing a new, wider groomer tending local trails.
The Lake Pleasant Town Board unanimously voted to authorize Superintendent of Highways Randy La Varnway to purchase the machine during a special early morning meeting Wednesday, Feb. 26.
Just one bid was received, from Green Mt. Trailblazers, East Dorset, Vt., for a 1997 Piston Bully 200 with a Mogel Master drag for $52,000. It was on the trails Saturday evening.
The groomer replaces an unreliable 2005 Right Track RT01SG, La Varnway said Saturday. Funding for the purchase will be $12,000 from the Recreation / Trail budget and $40,000 from a bond anticipation note.
The BAN will be for $60,000. The other $20,000 will be used to complete energy conservation upgrades to town buildings started last fall -- insulation and door upgrades to highway buildings.
La Varnway successfully argued that the purchase of a new, larger groomer for use in Perkins Clearing would increase the width of grooming from seven to 10 feet and greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to groom the trails, saving money in the long run by reducing the hours spent grooming.
The board also authorized selling the 2005 groomer as surplus.
The next regular meeting of the Lake Pleasant Town Board will be Monday, March 3, starting at 7 p.m. in Town Hall.
