SPECULATOR - Ten talented guys baked tasty pies for The Friends of the Lake Pleasant Library's first annual Apple Pie Baking Contest for Men Saturday, March 2, at Lake Pleasant Central School here.
The men baked a variety of luscious and unusual pies, some traditional, others with graham crackers, oatmeal, bacon, etc. Three local women who love pie -- Sue Swift, Barbara Tracy and Marian Wilbur -- judged each in several categories.
Each of the three top winners received a special mug and a gift certificate. The remaining pies were delicious and so very close in the ratings that each of their bakers received an honorable mention certificate.
The winners of Pie Baking Bragging Rights and prizes are: first place, Andy Weaver of Lake Pleasant; second, Mike Tracy of Speculator; and third, Chuck Morehouse of Piseco. The other talented bakers are Don Braunius, Pat Crouse, Neil McGovern, Bill Sampson, James Schidzick, Mickey O'Rourke and Bill Waller.
To the delight of about 30 folks who came for something fun to do on a rather dreary Saturday afternoon in March, after judging the pies were available for everyone to enjoy with vanilla ice cream. Pictures can be seen on the library's Facebook page.
Melody Lodge and Charlie Johns Store generously sponsored the event with gift certificates and supplies, and Marty Shean from the library came early and stayed late to help the Friends.
Check Hamilton County Express or stop in at the library for the Friends upcoming events.
