PISECO - James "Jim" Farber attended his last Arietta Town Board meeting April 1. He died of a heart attack at his home early in the morning of April 11.
Farber, 60, was in his 10th year as a councilman. He headed the Buildings and Streetlights Committee. His business degree and many years of experience owning and operating Farber's General Store in Piseco were assets on the board.
People interested in being appointed to the town council to fill Farber's seat for the rest of 2013 should send a letter of interest to Town of Arietta, POB 37, Piseco NY 12139.
The town is also going to need a new assessor.
Assessor William Parslow is not interested in being reappointed as sole assessor when his term ends in the fall. The town will advertise for someone who is qualified to be assessor.
In other staffing matters, Marie Buanno was appointed to the Arietta Planning Board April 1 as an alternate member to fill the vacant seat created by Judy Ford's resignation. The term ends Feb. 28, 2017.
Barry Baker was appointed to the Arietta Zoning Board of Appeals to replace Daniel Wilt. The appointment is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2013; the term ends Dec. 31, 2017.
The board will advertise for a Planning Board member to fill the vacancy created by moving Baker to the Zoning Board of Appeals.
In other business, Supervisor Rick Wilt told the board he has received three letters from local businesses in support of the town allocating money to Adirondacks Speculator Region Chamber of Commerce, as well as some phone calls from people complaining about the town supporting the chamber.
The board feels the town should support the chamber, but has been cutting the level of funding in recent years. The town allocated $18,000 to the chamber for 2011, $15,000 for 2012 and $12,000 for 2013, according to Wilt.
The Arietta Town Board will next meet Monday, May 6, starting at 6 p.m. at Piseco Community Hall.
