Volunteers drive seniors in the Great Sacandaga Lake area to medical appointments. The drivers use their own cars and, thanks to a grant from the Charles Wood Foundation, can be reimbursed at 21 cents a mile. STFSL provides supplemental insurance that covers drivers above what their own insurance provides.
Mary Ann Evans has participated in the Wheels program since its inception. "Our dispatcher sends out an email informing drivers of a request. If the time works for you, you respond and may be asked to take the request.
"I probably spend no more than six hours a month on this. It is a great way to meet some very interesting people and feel good about doing it."
To volunteer leave a message at 752-8737. Someone will call back within 24 hours. Further information on STFSL and the Wheels program can be had at www.stfsl.org.
