John "Jack" Raup

John "Jack" Raup of Latham passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013, after a long illness.

He was born in Hudson, the son of Henry and Mildred (Roraback) Raup. He spent his childhood in Kinderhook and was a graduate of Martin Van Buren High School. Thereafter, he worked for a time at Albany Felt Company and was a member of the National Guard. Jack enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Korea and North Africa. Upon finishing his tour of four years, four months and four days, he was dismissed with an honorable discharge.

He attended Hudson Valley Community College during its inception when it was a technical school in Troy. He continued his education at State University of New York at Oswego, obtaining a teaching degree in the field of Industrial Arts and a master's degree in Administration. His teaching career began in Keeseville and continued at North Colonie Central Schools in Latham. He was an active member and president of the North Colonie Teacher's Association for a number of years, and in 1979 received an award for Teacher of the Year from that organization.

During his retirement he resided mostly in Latham.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Elks. Over his years he enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and photography and was an aviation enthusiast and supporter of the performing arts.

He is survived by his children, Lou Ann (Jack) Kassinger, Marian (Dave) Reau and John R. (Kristen) Raup; his grandchildren, Mercedes Kassinger, Garth Kassinger, Aaron Reau, Jayne Reau, Sabrina Sisco, Alison Cramer, Jacqueline Cramer and Ronald Albert Cramer; and four great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be Friday, May 24, from 6-9 p.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Route 9, Valatie. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Stark Jones officiating. Burial will follow in West Ghent Cemetery.
