'Confederates' train in the North

GERMAN FLATS - The 9th Battalion (Blue Ridge Grays) Army of Northern Virginia, 1st Division, trained May 18-19 at Old Fort Herkimer Church in the Mohawk Valley.

Units are from Vermont, Northern New York state, lower Canada and the Southern Tier of New York state.

The weekend consisted of a school of the solider, artillery certification by the National Civil War Artillery Association, promotions and recognizing those with five, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service.

The Blue Ridge Grays is organized as an early- to mid-Civil War legion containing infantry, cavalry and artillery companies as well as signal and other support units.

The battalion is a family-oriented reenacting organization with a strong civilian organization, represented by the Blue Ridge Grays Soldier Aid Society, which serves as an important component in the group's activities.

Major John Rathbun of Indian Lake is chief of artillery. He often marches in uniform in local parades and brings a cannon to help celebrate the Fourth of July each year.
