SPECULATOR - A $50,000 donation toward purchase of the Skaret property to expand the village park here has brought the amount raised to $143,900.
The village has been accepting donations toward purchasing the land to expand the village park on Lake Pleasant by almost 50 percent, to .841 acres. The current park is .565 acres; the Skaret lot next to it is .276 acres.
That's the good news. The bad news is the Revitalization Committee's grant application to the Charles Wood Foundation for money toward purchasing the parcel has been turned down.
"We were not successful with our application to the Wood Foundation," Mayor Letty Rudes told the Village of Speculator Board of Trustees June 12.
In another infrastructure matter, Water Department Operator Florence Braunius reported the village is getting a new fire hydrant courtesy of the state Department of Transportation.
The old hydrant with a four-inch connection will not fit the new eight-inch water main installed where a box culvert is being replaced on State Route 8 in front of Lake Pleasant Library. "DOT had planned to move the hydrant to accommodate the new sidewalk there, but found it must be replaced instead," Braunius said.
In another water matter, Braunius said the water valves near the intersection of state routes 8 and 30 and Elm Lake Road have been covered by asphalt.
Braunius said DOT had told the Water Department it would be laying three-quarters of an inch of new asphalt there, so risers were ordered and installed on the valves accordingly. "Then they laid twice that much," Braunius said, "so all the valves are covered."
She said the valves will be relocated and longer risers will be installed.
Clerk / Treasurer Bonnie Page said several applications had been received for medium equipment operator. A worker has left village employment to start his own business.
The Board of Trustees will next meet Monday, June 24, starting at 7 p.m. at village hall.
