SPECULATOR - The Village of Speculator Board of Trustees approved offering up to $150,000 to purchase the Skaret property on State Route 30 when it met Monday, June 24.
The property has been on the market for several years. The village has been accepting donations toward purchasing the land to expand the adjoining village park on Lake Pleasant. To date $143,900 in donations has been received, with more expected.
Adding the Skaret property to the park would increase the park by 50 percent. The current park is .565 acres; the Skaret lot next to it is .33 acres with 102 feet of lakefront, according to licensed appraiser Tom Orr of Glens Falls, who was hired by the village.
According to a local real estate broker, the Skaret property is not a buildable lot due to a combination of the depth of the highway right-of-way there and setback requirements. However, Orr took that into consideration and still valued the parcel at $205,000.
His report says the setback is 50 feet from the high water mark and the state highway right-of-way extends 120 feet from the centerline on State Route 30. "This site is considered a building lot; however, because of setbacks, there is a limited area for improvements. This has been addressed in the site adjustment [portion of the appraisal]," his report says.
Superintendent of Highways Roger Blanchard reported the new Mack dump truck with plow and wing would be delivered late last week. The truck is being paid for with Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program funds.
Blanchard also told the board the back of the garbage truck has been refurbished and it is back in service. The truck had been leaking fluid from compacted garbage, he said.
Blanchard said new toilets for the fire hall and pavilion have been received and will be installed before July 4.
Blanchard was authorized to hire Lee Page as a medium equipment operator at highway with a six-month probationary pay rate of $13.22 per hour.
-- Aaron Weaver, president of Lake Pleasant Speculator Historical Society, received permission to place a historical marker sign on village property in front of Split Rock, also known as Bidwell's Hotel, on Gilmantown Road.
-- The trustees agreed to hold an Open House at the new Village Hall on Rt. 8 Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The trustees will take one-hour turns welcoming visitors and providing homemade refreshments.
The Board of Trustees will next meet Monday, July 8, starting at 7 p.m. in Village Hall.
