Girard Creek culvert work means lengthy detour

WELLS - Culvert replacement means no through traffic on State Route 8 between Wells and Wevertown starting today.

Rt. 8 will be closed to through traffic from 7 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, to at least 7 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16. The New York State Department of Transportation is utilizing State Route 30 between Wells and Indian Lake and Rt. 28 between Indian Lake and Wevertown as a detour.

The Girard Creek culvert is being replaced. Girard Creek is 3.5 miles north of the intersection of state routes 8 and 30 in the Town of Wells and about 20 miles south of Wevertown.

DOT Engineer-In-Charge Bill Yockel says the 70- to 80-year-old metal culvert being replaced is five feet in diameter. The new aluminum culvert is 10 feet in diameter.

Detour signs and message boards are directing motorists. When the road reopens a temporary traffic light will control one-way traffic at the site.

"We expect to close the road Wednesday morning and hopefully open it back up Friday morning to one-lane traffic, like we have right now," Yockel says.

That will last "for a week or two," he added.
