Jack Curtis Perry Jr., 65, of Michigan, was driving his 2002 Honda Accord west when he fell asleep at the wheel. The car left the highway, traveled 30 yards, hit a driveway culvert and embankment, became airborne for 26 yards and slammed into the base of a tree.
Perry complained of back pain and his wife of chest pain. Morehouse and Kayahora ambulances took them to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica. Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Kevin Braunius investigated. "Seatbelts and deployed airbags saved their lives," Braunius says.
