Police Report - 09/01/2010

Thursday, Aug. 12, 11:50am: Two whitewater rafters in the Hudson Gorge Primitive Area, Town of Indian Lake, were thrown from a raft and injured.

Greg Hogan, 25, and a 15-year-old male, both of Warwick, RI were ejected from the raft when it took a large wave sideways. The youth aggravated a preexisting shoulder injury while swimming and Hogan injured his lower back when he was pinned between the raft and a rock.

Forest rangers and ambulance personnel carried Hogan to a waiting ambulance. The young man walked. Both were taken to Glens Fall Hospital.

Thursday, Aug. 12, 9:26pm: Forest rangers were notified of a group of campers from Smyrna who had not returned from a late afternoon hike.

Angel Whaley, 21; Margo Whaley, 39; Jody Whaley, 42; Shane Peckham, 23; a 16-year-old female; a 17-year-old female; a 14-year-old male; and a 3-year-old male had gone hiking with four others on snowmobile trail north of the Limekiln campground in the Town of Inlet.

At about a half-mile four of the hikers turned back. The others continued down the trail that became an unimproved cross-country ski trail paralleling the north side of Limekiln Swamp.

At 10:30 p.m. a forest ranger made voice contact with the group, though they were about a mile away at the other end of the swamp. At 11:45 p.m. rangers located the group in good health.

They were escorted out of the woods and returned to their campsite by 2 a.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2:55am: Forest rangers were notified of two kayakers overdue from a kayaking trip on West Canada Creek in the Ferris Lake Wild Forest, Town of Morehouse.

James Leuthauser, 49, and Chad Leuthauser, 19, both of Cicero, had driven from their hometown with their new kayaks. Five forest rangers responded.

The pair was located on the South Branch of West Canada Creek at 6:30 a.m. They were cold, wet and tired but otherwise in good condition.

Friday, Aug. 27, 7:55am: A passenger riding with Justin M. Drinkwine, 17, Willsboro, was taken to hospital following a one-car accident on Rt. 8 in the Town of Wells, 1.5 miles south of Old Rt. 8b.

Drinkwine was driving a 2005 Hyundai northbound when he swerved to avoid three deer that entered the highway. The vehicle left the road and Drinkwine lost control on a grassy slope.

Wells Volunteer Ambulance Corps took Kyli Sawiers, 15, to Nathan Littauer Hospital.

Sheriff Karl Abrams investigated. O’Connor’s Towing removed the vehicle to Speculator Auto.

Saturday, Aug. 28, 12:48am: Stanley E. Brown, 59, Indian Lake, was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of more than .08 percent and driving while intoxicated. The arrest was made on Bennett Road in the Town of Indian Lake.
