Cousins That Care holds first run

INLET - Sixty-one people came from all over the country to participate in Cousins That Care's first 5K run / walk: Connecticut, Maryland, California, Florida, South Carolina, New York, Massachusetts and the Adirondacks.

The 3.1-mile loop of part snowmobile trail and part blacktop both started and finished at The Ole Barn on Limekiln Lake Road here Saturday, Aug. 24.

The Cousins That Care is composed of seven cousins, all from Inlet, who raise money for charities, scholarships and families in need. They include founder Melanie Levi, Shelby Townsend, Shawn Hansen, Laura Levi, Britney Levi, Cory Hansen and Thomas Levi.

The top three male finishers were Chris Shaw, Silver Spring, Md., 17:47; Doug Letterman, Oakland, Calif., 18:14; and WKTV Meteorologist Bill Kardas, Utica, 21:41.

The top three women's finishers were: Laura Levi, Inlet, 24:54; Emily Greene, Old Forge, 25:57; and Maria Andrews, Fort Myers, Fla., 26:29.

The Cousins That Care also held a Chinese auction after the event, with many, many items and gift certificates generously donated by local businesses and individuals alike. There was also a 50/50 raffle, and tickets were sold for a flat screen TV drawing Sept. 22, at the Cousins annual spaghetti dinner, also held at The Ole Barn.

Cousins That Care expressed its deepest thanks to everyone who participated and the 60 sponsors who supported them; the landowners who allowed their property to be used for the event, Town of Inlet Superintendent of Highways Shawn Hansen and employee Don Townsend for the work they did on the trail; Chief of Police Andrew Kalil for traffic control; Inlet Volunteer Ambulance Corps driver Jim Keough and Paramedic Dave Berkstresser for standing by; all the volunteers who worked the raffles, water stations, set-up and clean-up; and last, but not least, Ron and Kathy Hansen (grandparents of the cousins) for hosting this and all Cousins That Care events at their restaurant.
