Get those chimneys cleaned

Dear Cris,

Once again cold weather is just around the corner. It won't be long before we will be turning on the heat again.

With that chilling thought in mind, the Lake Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department will one again be cleaning chimneys of residents in the Lake Pleasant Fire District, on Saturday, Oct. 5, starting at 8 a.m. We are holding this project in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week.

To schedule your chimney for cleaning, call the Lake Pleasant Fire Station at (518) 548-3760 and leave a message on the answering machine with your name, a phone number where you can be reached if we have any questions and the exact location of your property including the numerical (911) address.

As in the past, due to liability reasons, we request that someone be present at the property that can access the house on cleaning day.

With energy costs expected to climb again this winter, more people than ever will be turning to wood heat. Now more than ever it is imperative that you ensure your chimneys are clean for your own peace of mind and your family's safety.

Since the start of our chimney-cleaning program, the number and severity of our chimney fire calls has fallen to near zero. But you must do your part to help us maintain this record by checking your chimney often during the heating season and having it cleaned often.

This is also a good time to ensure that your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are in good working order and have fresh batteries installed. Your life and your family's lives may depend on them.
