The new requirement does not affect senior citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption.
Registration letters were mailed to Hamilton County property owners last month. Each letter contains the owner's STAR registration code and information on how to register, either via the Internet at www.tax.ny.gov or by telephone at (518) 457-2036. The deadline is Dec. 31.
So far, fewer than half of qualified recipients have completed the registration process.
To register for the Basic STAR exemption one must:
-- provide the STAR code on the letter (or use the STAR code lookup);
-- provide names and social security numbers for all owners and spouses;
-- confirm the property is the primary residence of one of its owners (married couples with multiple residences may only claim one STAR exemption);
-- confirm the combined income of the owners and spouses is less than $500,000; and
-- confirm no resident owner receives residency-based tax benefits in another state.
This is a one-time registration process for Basic STAR. Contact the local assessor or Hamilton County Real Property Tax Services at (518) 548-5531 for more information or assistance.
Senior citizens who currently receive the Enhanced STAR exemption are not affected by this new requirement. However, they must continue to apply annually to their local assessor, or participate in the Income Verification Program.
