The O'Brien family is also adding a "Silver Fox" clinic group led by Chuck and Chari Smith, for older folks who want to ski with others and learn some tips.
The Tom Preston Scholarship is designed to help students share the passion and love for skiing and riding at Oak Mountain like Preston does. Preston is one of the mountain's certified instructors, and he knows a lot about the sport and the area.
To apply for this scholarship a student just writes an essay on why he or she should receive this award. The winner will receive a 2013-14 Season Pass to Oak Mountain, eight weeks of free student lessons and free rentals.
Oak is also adding a half an hour of indoor learning to each lesson. Students will learn why skis are shaped the way they are, how to make snow, avalanche awareness and more.
"We are also adding for the Sunday kids fourth-grade and up their choice of terrain park lessons, race lessons or just regular ski and snowboarding lessons," says Laura O'Brien.
More Than Just A Mom is for mothers who want to get out on the snow but aren't sure if they want to go alone, would like some helpful tips, and want an excuse to get some fresh air and enjoy the snow. Clinics will be held Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to noon for eight weeks (Dec. 13 and 20; Jan. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31; and Feb. 7).
The cost is $20 for lift and lesson each week or $160 for all eight weeks. Those with a season pass pay only $10 each week or $80 for the eight weeks. There will be lunch specials for moms who want to stay a bit longer.
