Superintendent could be shared

PISECO - Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES Superintendent Patrick Michel says Piseco Common School District can hire either a full- or part-time superintendent or share one with another school district.

It would be easiest, he said, to share a superintendent with Lake Pleasant Central School District, but he did not know if the superintendent there, Ernie Virgil, would be interested.

Michel also discussed the differences between a certified superintendent and a certified administrator when he met with the PCSD Board of Education Oct. 2, and recommended the board hire someone with central office experience, not just a school administrator.

Michel said he could handle the advertising, and is willing to screen applications and present the school board with a list of possible candidates.

He noted a board of education hires the superintendent and district clerk, but all other hires should be on recommendation of the superintendent.

Gregory Beall from the Otsego Northern Catskills BOCES is willing to serve as interim superintendent while the search for a new superintendent is conducted, Michel said.

There was talk of forming a committee to help with the process, but the school's attorney, Erin Morris, said the school district first should have an operating policy under which people are appointed to a committee. The policy should include the format under which the committee operates, she said.

Part-time Interim Superintendent Gail Wilcox's last day will be Oct. 31.
