BIG MOOSE - Big Moose Fire Company, in conjunction with the Town of Webb fire commissioners and Dunn's Boat Service, recently made several upgrades to the first fireboat in Herkimer County.
The fireboat was first put into service in 1950. Approximately 25 percent of Big Moose Lake is boat access only, and several of the camps are very difficult to get to by road let alone trying to get a fire truck to them.
Over the years Big Moose has had some significant fires: the four-story Glenmore Hotel in 1950, The Higby Hotel in 1921 (lost the main building and 20 surrounding buildings) and Lake View Lodge in 1970 (lost the third wing).
Needless to say, the fireboat has been a huge asset to the fire company. The firemen are able to respond faster, establish an initial attack and more importantly establish a constant water supply.
With a very generous donation from Dunn's Boat Service, the fireboat received a 2008 90hp Evinrude E-Tec motor including controls and a two-year warranty. These motors are turnkey starting and at the leading edge of emissions and maximizing horsepower.
Dunn's also donated half of the labor to install the motor and perform several other upgrades. Upgrades include new pump mounts, new hose beds, an onboard charger, a master power switch, an internal gas tank, an interior paint job, new wiring and several LED lights for visibility.
The 18-foot aluminum hull boat is equipped with two 150 gallon per minute (gpm) pumps with one set up for attack (two pre-connected, 1-3/4 inch lines at 150 feet and 300 feet) and the other for water supply / attack (one pre-connected, three-inch lightweight combat line at 400 feet).
The boat also carries an additional 200 feet of three-inch hose, 200 feet of 1-3/4 inch hose, an EMT "Jump Bag," an Automatic External Defibulator (AED), a backboard and other rescue equipment.
Dunn's also houses the fireboat in the west slip of its boathouse for the six months it is in service each year, from May through the end of October.
The Big Moose Fire Company in cooperation with Big Moose Ambulance Company provides fire suppression and rescue service in the hamlets of Big Moose, Stillwater, Twitchell Lake and Beaver River in a remote northern part of the Town of Webb in northern Herkimer County.
With its high-rail rescue unit, Big Moose also provides EMS and rescue coverage along 32 miles of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, from Carter Station to Sabattis.
