PISECO - The Piseco Common School District Board of Education has approved six proposals made by the Piseco School Use Committee and allocated $20,000 to implement them.
The committee was formed after the school started sending all its students to other districts, leaving its classrooms empty.
The six proposals are a Technology Room, a school website, a Fitness Room, an After School Program, an Art Room and Family Movie Nights.
The Technology Room is for the public to access the Internet and “other media devices.” It has laptop and desktop computers, a printer, a smartboard, an area for children and storage for devices such as projectors.
It will be open during school and library hours starting in about a week, according to Interim Superintendent Gail Wilcox.
The Fitness Room will have a treadmill, a Stairmaster, a stationary bicycle, a rowing machine, dumbbells, aerobic steps, ankle weights, a scale, a TV, a VCR, a DVD player, a CD player, an open area for video workouts / space to hold a class and a child-friendly play zone. There will be a sign-out procedure for snowshoes and skis.
The committee hopes to have it open by Nov. 19. It will be open during school and library hours.
The Art Room is intended as a place for people capable of teaching art or a craft to hold classes for any age group. To schedule a class submit an outline to the committee with the dates and times the room would be needed and a list of any fees.
The After School Program is for Piseco and Lake Pleasant children in grades K-6. It will operate every school day from 2:45-5:15 p.m. starting after Christmas break. Parents must pick up their children.
A teacher (Alicia Wilt) and an aide (Stacy Warner) were hired to work part-time from 2:30-5:30 p.m. for $25 and $15 an hour respectively.
Among other information the website, which is being developed, will have dates and times of classes, events and the hours rooms are open and will allow the public to communicate with the committee and the BOE. It will be at www.Pisecocommon-school.org in about two weeks.
A Facebook page was started last week.
The committee will hold Family Movie Nights in the gym. There will be a spot on the website for suggesting movies. Parents will be expected to make sure their children are supervised.
One volunteer will be needed for each movie night to oversee the presentation and clean up.
The Piseco School Use Committee has 11 members: Charlie Hilligrass, Joan Bobbette, Yvette Dorr, Barb Dorr, Gail Gosson, Vickie Orr, John Wheeler, Barry Arnold, Barry Baker, Aaron Bartholomew and Christine Michienzi.
