LONG LAKE--The Town of Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department offers an expedition up Blue Mountain with Certified Guide Spencer Morrissey Saturday, Dec. 7. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Long Lake Town Offices, 1130 Deerland Rd.
Blue Mountain is one of the taller fire tower peaks with views of the entire region. With a semi-steep trail this hike is not an easy stroll, but a nice challenge. It is about seven miles round-trip.
Winter conditions can be expected; those who are not properly attired will not be taken on the hike.
Pre-registration and signed waivers are required. Fees are $20 each, $10 under age 18 and free to residents of Long Lake and Raquette Lake. Family rates are two adults and two children $50, two adults and three children $60 and two adults and four children $70. Sign up for the family rate in advance.
Pay with cash or check in person or call (518) 624-3077 to register. If registering by phone mail check or money order to Town of Long Lake, POB 496, Long Lake NY 12847. Registration will end Thursday, Dec. 5, at 4 p.m.
The Long Lake Little Bus will provide transportation to and from the trailhead.
THE GEAR LIST
Pants should be a quick drying polyester mix. Shirts can be polyester or nylon; merino wool is best. Wear comfortable waterproof hiking boots, a fleece or primiloft jacket and a warm hat and bring two pairs of gloves, an extra pair of socks and a rain jacket. Gaiters are a good idea but optional.
Each hiker should also have trekking poles and a small backpack with sunglasses (optional), camera, headlamp (just in case), at least two liters of water, lunch and snacks, sunscreen and a warm drink (optional).
Be prepared for winter conditions. Snowshoes and traction (microspikes) should be brought along just in case. Limited pairs of microspikes and snowshoes are available, but request in advance, giving shoe size for microspikes and weight for snowshoes.
Avoid cotton. If cotton gets wet it will stay wet and become heavy and uncomfortable.
