Merrill E. Johnson

INDIAN LAKE -- Merrill E. Johnson, 91, of Jerry Savarie Road, Indian Lake, died Friday morning, December 6, 2013 at Glens Falls Hospital.
Born on April 28, 1922 in Castleton, Vt., he was the son of the late Einar and Esther (Anderson) Johnson. He was a 1939 graduate of Scotia High School.
Merrill served in the United States Navy during World War II as an aviation machinist’s mate third class. He married Bereneice Frank on February 10, 1945 in Scotia.
Upon his honorable discharge February 22, 1946, Merrill began his 42 year career with General Electric, working first at the Schenectady plant, then in Burlington, Vt., before transferring to the Westover, Johnson City, N.Y. plant.
He and Bereneice vacationed here annually since 1946 and split their time between Indian Lake and Apalachin, N.Y. following retirement and had made Indian Lake their permanent home recently.
Merrill enjoyed hunting, wood working, woodcarving and spending time with his family. He was active with Tioga County Rural Ministries where he designed and helped build handicap access ramps throughout Tioga County, building over 50 ramps. He was instrumental in the design and construction of the ramp at the First United Methodist Church of Indian Lake.
Merrill and Bereneice were founding members of the Park Terrace United Methodist Church in Apalachin. He was also a member of the Parker-Benton American Legion Post 1392, the First United Methodist Church of Indian Lake, the Indian Lake Blue Mountain Lake Fish and Game Club and General Electric’s Elfun Society.
He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Barossa; and two grandchildren, Ari and Jesse Finander.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Bereneice Johnson; two daughters and two sons, Karen Derosa (Rich) of Bradford, Vt., Merrill Johnson Jr. (Denise) of Shelburne, Vt., Neil Johnson of Indian Lake and Kristen Budziak (Walter) of Hanover, Pa.; one sister, Esther Baxter of Hoosick Falls; seven grandchildren, Emily (Greg) Gnee, Michael (Miranda) Johnson, Daniel (Gail) Johnson, Ethan Derosa, Lauren Johnson, Evan Budziak and Zan Budziak; three great-grandchildren, Mia Johnson, Max Johnson and Zack Gnee; and several nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Merrill’s wishes, there are no calling hours or funeral services scheduled. The Johnson family will celebrate Merrill’s life in the spring of 2014.
