Ian Thomas Alves, age 16, grandson of George F. Griebel of Indian Lake, New York, passed peacefully on December 7, 2012, at the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, North Dakota. He had been undergoing continuous treatments and surgeries at the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, and the RMCC in Fargo, for nearly two years in his courageous struggle to overcome double, terminal cancers.
Ian was born on December 28, 1995, in Waterbury, CT, to Lise and John Alves. When Ian was age 3, the Alves family relocated to the Fargo area where Ian attended West Fargo schools.
Ian enjoyed spending summer and winter vacation time at Indian Lake. He loved the outdoors and nature, camping, animals and the Adirondack way of life.
Ian loved running and was a proud member of the West Fargo High School Cross Country and Track teams. He was also a 4-year participant in Tai Kwon Do martial arts and had earned his Black Belt. Ian enjoyed skating and played junior team ice hockey for several seasons. His interests also included dramatics and he was a member of the WFHS Gamers Club. He was an avid reader and high achiever scholastically.
He is survived by his mother, Lise, and brother, Sean, both of Horace, ND, grandfather, George Griebel, and Catherine Bauer, both of Indian Lake, NY, grandmother Carol Kennedy of Plano, TX and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceeded in death by his father, John, in 2006, grandparents Charlotte Collin-Griebel, Stephen Kennedy and Leonel and Maria Alves.
Visitation was Tuesday, December 11, 2012, followed by a prayer service and memorial at the Community Presbyterian Church, West Fargo. The funeral was held in Fargo at the First Presbyterial Church on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, followed by a gravesite service at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fargo.
