Sports Correspondent
Moriah, the 2012 Section VII Class C Champion, rallied in the fourth quarter of this year’s Section VII Class D semi-final game to beat the Indian Lake / Long Lake Lady Orange and advance to the championship game.
Classification is based on enrollment, and due to fewer students this year than last Moriah moved down to Class D for the 2012-2013 season.
Moriah got off to a strong start, leading 12-8 after the opening eight minutes of play. The Lady ...

ABOUT THE WEEK OF MAY 22, 1964, babies in the woods should be left there. Hikers and sightseers were cautioned by the state Conservation Department against picking up and taking home baby wild animals they may find in the woods and open fields.
Animalnapping runs high in May and June, the department said, and it was a misdemeanor to capture or harbor wild animals. In addition, it could be dangerous. Supervising Wildlife Biologist C. William Severinghaus pointed out that with deer, a wide-eyed fa ...

Digital trail cameras were just the beginning

The spring gobbler season opened May 1, and the statewide walleye, northern pike, tiger muskie and pickerel seasons opened Saturday, May 4.
As I was prepping for the remaining days of the gobbler seasons (no, I haven't taken both birds yet) I got to thinking about some of my camera equipment. It's often a problem deciding just which camera - or how many - to bring along on any hunting or fishing trip and that really got me thinking about how things ...

ABOUT THE WEEK OF MAY 15, 1964, a local branch of the United States Postal Service wrote: "It is a pleasure to report to you on the progress your post office is making in our daily efforts to cope with the mounting volume of mail. We may not be the biggest link in the chain of post offices that stretches across the country, and we lack some of the more modern mechanization in the post offices of cities like Detroit and Chicago.
"However, we are the main avenue and still the most economical avenu ...

Muddy conditions necessitate caution

The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation is warning climbers, hikers and other backcountry trekkers to be careful and cautious on trails above 3,000 feet, until at least early June when trail conditions are expected to be much better. Of course, much of the following information might be moot already, considering the warm spell we've experienced the past week or so.
In any event, trails and vegetation in the higher reaches are most vulnerable to late ...

The least we can do

Hello Cris:
Every Memorial Day only a handful of people attend the short memorial services held by the Indian Lake American Legion. It consists of a prayer, firing a salute and the placement of a wreath, followed by sounding Taps at each of four memorials.
The ceremony takes less than 15 minutes at each location, but is so significant in honoring and paying our respects to all those veterans who have paid the ultimate price.
We would like to urge everyone to try and attend at least one convenien ...

Change is good

Dear Editor,
As many of you know, the Indian Lake Theater, along with all small theaters across the country, is facing the challenge of going digital.
The movie industry, later this year, will no longer supply movies in a 35 mm format, but rather in a digital format. That mandates that all theaters make the expensive switch to digital equipment.
The Indian Lake Theater is actually much more than a place to just show movies, but is a community center that also offers live performances, a venue fo ...

Wants sand and salt gone

Dear Editor,
I have owned my home in Lake Pleasant since 1968. I maintain my property (cutting lawn, trees etc.)
For the last couple of years the town has not removed the sand and salt from the front of the house. Therefore the sand and salt is killing my grass and trees. I made three phone calls to [Superintendent of Highways] Mr. Desrochers last year but he never returned my calls.
I went to his office and he stated after the men are done working on Page Street he would send them up; needless to say this never happened. ...

Thanks for the help

Dear Cris,
The Wells Emergency Services held a Tricky Tray event April 27. Both organizations would like to take this opportunity to say a big "Thank You" to all who participated.
We received many donations from individuals and businesses in our area. Everyone was very supportive and generous. Unfortunately we can't list everyone individually who donated, but we are very grateful for everything that was donated to us for this event.
The Wells Volunteer Fire Company and the Wells Ambulance Corps ...
