PISECO - Two 1,000-gallon fuel tanks at Piseco Elementary School are compromised and must be removed and replaced at an estimated cost of $200,000.

The outer containment tanks are allowing water to seep in, which could potentially damage the inner tanks. That would allow fuel to leak into the outer tanks and possibly the surrounding soil.

As a result the Piseco Common School District Board of Education has declared the removal and replacement of the tanks is an emergency project.

Former Superintendent Peter Hallock first brought the matter to the board’s attention in February.

The engineering firm of Bernier, Carr and Associates, Watertown, is filing the necessary paperwork and obtaining the necessary permits. Bernier, Carr engineer Mary Cecil reviewed the process during a special BOE meeting Nov. 13.

The money is coming from unexpended fund balance.

SKI PROGRAM

The school district will pay half the cost of the Oak Mountain Youth Ski Program sponsored by the school and the Town of Arietta. The town will pay the other half.

The program includes eight weeks of lessons for grades K-6, ski and snowboard rentals for lessons, reduced rental rates for other days and lift tickets for the season.

Also, students have the option of leasing skis from Beaver Brook Outfitters for $99 for the season.

OTHER BUSINESS

• Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield is increasing the district’s health insurance premium as of Dec. 13. Six people are covered by the plan.

• The following items were declared surplus: music and other old textbooks remaining in the school building, a dental chair and related equipment and an old piano.

• BOE meetings are changing from the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. to the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. Its next meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 13.
