The holiday break provided local basketball teams the opportunity to compete against competition outside the league and Section. The Indian Lake/Long Lake girls went up against two Section X teams while the Wells boys competed against a couple of Section II teams.

The IL/LL girls traveled north to take part in a Coaches vs. Cancer Section X vs. Section VII Challenge.

In the first game, The Orange faced the Chateaugay Bulldogs, who are currently ranked fourth  in the New York State Sportswriter Association poll. The game was a family affair for the Reynolds. John Reynolds, the IL/LL coach and his daughter Carli Reynolds, a senior guard for IL/LL went up against Chris Reynolds, the head coach for Chateaugay and brother and Uncle respectively.

The game was competitive in the first quarter with Chateaugay holding a one point lead. In the second quarter, the Bulldogs pulled away outscoring The Orange by five to hold a 16-13 lead at halftime. Following the break, The Orange outscored Chateaugay 13-12 to trail by five. The final eight minutes was competitive with the Bulldogs holding a slim advantage at 6-4 as they went on to take the 37-30 win.

Carli Reynolds led The Orange with 17 points.

IL/LL: Farrell 1-0-2, Bain 1-0-2, Pierson 1-0-2, Reynolds 7-2-17, S. Hinckley 0-0-0, Pine 3-1-7, M. Hinckley 0-0-0. Totals 13-3-30.

The second round of the Section X vs. Section VII Challenge pitted the Brushton-Moira Panthers up against IL/LL. The Panthers jumped out to a 15-5 first quarter lead and outscored The Orange in each of the following three quarters to capture a 44-26 win.

Once again, Carli Reynolds was the top scorer for The Orange with 18 points. Melanie Pierson contributed seven rebounds and three steals.

IL/LL: Farrell 1-0-2, Bain 0-0-0, Pierson 1-0-2, Reynolds 4-9-18, Miller 0-0-0, S. Hinckley 0-0-0, Pine 1-2-4, M. Hinckley 0-0-0, Smith 0-0-0, Deshane 0-0-0. Totals 7-11-26.

The Wells boys ventured south to take part in the John J. Woodward Memorial boys’ basketball tournament. The first game matched Wells against The Thunder Chickens from Doane Stuart.

The Indians got off to a great start leading the game 11-4 after the first quarter. Doane Stuart came out strong in the second quarter racking up 21 points to head into half-time with a 25-22 lead.

Wells tied the game at 26 early in the third quarter, but Doane Stuart answered with a 17-3 run to end the period leading 43-29. The Indians continued to play hard and outscored The Thunder Chickens 15-8 in the fourth quarter. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the middle two quarters and Doane Stuart took the 51 - 44 win.

Jake Early led the Wells offense with 20 points while Ryan Woodward chipped in with 12 points. Doane Stuart: Williams 9-3-23, Giroux 1-0-2, Hodgkinson 3-0-6, Halterman 2-2-6, Schettini 3-0-6, Speights 3-0-6, Thompson III 1-0-2. Totals: 22-5-51.

Wells: Woodward 6-0-12, DeJong 1-0-2, Earley 7-5-20, Hayes 1-1-4, Fish 3-0-6. Totals: 18-6-44.

Doane Stuart 4 21 18 8 - 51; Wells 11 11 7 15 - 44

3-point goals: Doane Stuart 2 (Williams 2); Wells 2 (Earley, Hayes).

Wells faced the Northville Falcons in their second game of the round-robin tournament.

Northville got off to a good start outscoring Wells 17-10 in both the first and second quarters on their way to a 56-40 win. Jake Early was the catalyst for the Wells offense tallying 27 points.

Wells: Earley 9-8-27, Woodward 1-1-3, Fish 3-0-6, Raymond 1-0-2, Longnecker 1-0-2. Totals: 15-8-40.

Northville: Michalek 4-0-8, Briggs 4-0-9, Ashcroft 4-5-14, Hayward 3-0-6, Ryder 6-0-15,

Henderson 1-2-4. Totals: 22-7-56.

Wells 10 10 8 12 - 40; Northville 17 17 10 12  —  56
