Last week’s high school basketball action started off with a match-up between the two county girls’ teams and ended with all the area teams picking up wins.

Mid-week games for the Indian Lake / Long Lake boys’ team and the Wells boys’ and girls’ teams were postponed due to poor travel conditions.

IL/LL 58, Wells 19

Tuesday the undefeated IL/LL girls traveled to Wells for a Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference Division III game. The Orange got off to a quick start, playing aggressive defense and forcing turnovers for Wells. IL/LL converted those turnovers into points and jumped out to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter.

The Orange continued to control the game and went on to capture a 58-19 win.

Three seniors led The Orange defense. Allison Pine had 17 points, Carli Reynolds 15 and Murphy Farrell 13. Reynolds recorded nine rebounds and Farrell had nine steals.

For Wells, Karlie Tomlinson had seven points, four assists and six rebounds. Desi Gallup added seven rebounds.

Wells 59, Bolton 35

The Wells girls traveled to Bolton Thursday to pick up a 59-35 non-league win. The Indians got off to a strong start with a 10-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter. They were never challenged throughout the game, holding a 50-25 lead after three periods of play.

Karli Tomlinson turned in a double-double to lead Wells. She netted 16 points and hauled in 15 rebounds as well as recording seven steals. Desiree Gallup also scored 16 points, as well as snagging five steals. Sam Bartholf chipped in with eight steals.

IL/LL 60, Westport 35

There was a showdown in Indian Lake Friday between two undefeated MVAC girls’ teams. The IL/LL Orange hosted perennial girls basketball power Westport. Both teams came into the game with a perfect league record of 5-0.

The first quarter of play was competitive with The Orange holding a slight lead at 15-12. In the second period IL/LL controlled the offensive boards and forced Westport turnovers, resulting in a 19-4 advantage. However, a strong, talented and experienced Westport team wasn’t ready to concede and came out in the third quarter to play even with The Orange at 14-14.

In the final eight minutes The Orange continued to play strong and wear down Westport as they outscored The Eagles 12-5 and won the game at 60-35 to remain undefeated.

IL/LL was led by a contingent of seniors. Carli Reynolds netted a career-high 29 points and pulled in six rebounds while Allison Pine recorded 14 points and 15 rebounds. In addition to non-stop aggressive play, Murphy Farrell and Melanie Pierson contributed seven and four points respectively.

BOYS VARSITY

IL/LL 59, King’s School 33

The IL/LL boys traveled to King’s School Friday for a non-league game. The Orange jumped out to a 19-10 first quarter lead and was never tested as they picked up the 59-33 win.

Matt Rusch put forth a great game, recording a double-double of 20 points and 17 rebounds to lead The Orange. Hank Evatt contributed with 17 points.

Wells 60, M/N 40

The Wells boys hosted Minerva / Newcomb Friday evening and picked up a league win.

In the first quarter Wells doubled its opponents’ points to hold an 8-4 advantage. The second quarter ended with a slight advantage for The Indians that resulted in a seven-point lead at the half.

The third period was played evenly, with both teams netting 13 points. In the final eight minutes of play Wells picked up the intensity and outscored M/N by 13 points on their way to the 60-40 win.

Jake Early led The Indians with 27 points and Ryan Woodward contributed 11 points.

Wells: Earley 9-9-27, Hayes 3-0-9, Woodward 5-1-11, Raymond 0-3-3, Fish 2-2-6, DeJong 0-4-4. Totals 19-19-60.
