The past week of high school basketball got underway Monday, Jan. 14, with the Indian Lake / Long Lake boys and girls teams hosting a Coaches vs. Cancer game. The event raised over $1,600 to benefit the American Cancer Society.

The IL/LL boys played the first game of the double header against Schroon Lake. The Orange weren’t intimidated by the seventh-ranked Wildcats and played competitively throughout the game. IL/LL trailed by only three at halftime and came within two points in the third quarter. In the final quarter, Schroon Lake recorded 13 of their 19 points from the foul line to pick up the hard fought 54-45 win.

Colin Farrell was the top scorer for IL/LL with 18, followed by Curtis Seaman’s 12 points.

The IL/LL girls, currently ranked 18th among Class D teams, had an easy game against Schroon Lake. They jumped out to an 18-4 lead and cruised to the 40-16 win. Meg Smith led The Orange with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds.

IL/LL 64, WELLS 23

The two county varsity teams faced each other last week. Tuesday, Jan. 15, the girls matched up in Wells and Wednesday evening the boys faced one another in Long Lake.

In the girls’ game, three IL/LL players scored in double figures to lead their team to the 64-23 win. Meg Smith had 16 points, while Shannon Farrell and Sydney Hinckley each chipped in 10.

Brittany Woodward was high scorer for Wells, netting 17 points.

The boys’ game was very competitive with Wells holding a one-point lead after the first quarter of play. In the second period Wells outscored The Orange by four to take a 19-14 halftime lead. Following the break, the two teams played fairly even again with IL/LL taking the quarter 16-15 as Wells maintained the lead at 34-30. In the final quarter, Wells got off to a good start, leading by seven at one point. The Orange weren’t ready to concede as they rallied to outscore Wells by nine down the stretch and gain the 51-46 win.

IL/LL was led by Colin Farrell and Henry Sandiford with 15 and 13 points respectively. Sandiford also recorded five assists and four steals.

Jake Early led Wells with 16 points, while Caleb Hayes chipped in with 13.

All county teams except the Wells girls played a game Friday, Jan. 18. The Wells boys hosted Lake Placid, while IL/LL boys and girls traveled to Willsboro.

The Wells boys led Lake Placid by 14 points after the first quarter on their way to an easy 52-34 win. Kenny Chicoski led the Indian attack with 13 points. Caleb Hayes recorded 10 points, while Ben Brennan contributed nine points and eight rebounds. Jake Early chipped in with seven points and nine rebounds.

In Willsboro, the IL/LL boys were hot from behind the arc, connecting on 12 three-point shots to outscore the host Warriors 58-31. Colin Farrell led all scorers with 22 points, followed by Henry Sandiford with 20.

The IL/LL girls had a 16-1 run in the second quarter to take a 36-14 halftime lead. They followed that up with a 12-2 third quarter en route to a 52-27 win over Willsboro.

Shannon Farrell and Jessica Bain led The Orange attack with 16 and 14 points respectively.
